Two things offered at the same price routinely get treated in completely different ways. A trial offer at thirty dollars can build confidence in the main offer, and the same thirty dollars can produce the verdict so this is all it amounts to. If the price is the same and the treatment differs, price is not the only thing settling the treatment.
What settles it is what happened for that money. And what a trial offer can produce falls broadly into two. Either the person experiences a thinned version of the real thing, or they experience one part of the real thing in complete form.
Three points settle here. Where the substance of the seen as cheap worry actually sits, given that it is not the absolute price. How what you drop from the main offer changes what gets established on the receiving side. And what the free range should be counted back from.
Some things do not settle. What to charge for the entrance. With the field being handled and the nature of what the main offer delivers, the same number means something else, so no prices appear here. The same holds for where to place mention of the main offer. What gets handled is not the placement but what the entrance turns into as a result.
The damage lands on the sorting. A trial offer is the entrance to the main offer, and an entrance does work in sending unsuitable people away early. Someone whose need is met inside the range the entrance covers was never a candidate for the main offer. Their not proceeding is a verdict, not a loss. Without the sorting, unsuitable people enter the main offer, and the mismatch surfaces after they are in. That mismatch could have been handled at the entrance.
And as long as an entrance gets assessed by its conversion rate, improvement tends to run in the direction that weakens the sorting. Strengthen the mention of the main offer and conversion rises. The substance of the entrance itself gets compressed by as much as conversion rose. An indicator improving while what you hand over shrinks takes exactly this shape.
There is a further loss, and it fixes itself onto the price. Hand over a thinned version of the real thing and the receiving side estimates the main offer’s size as a ratio. Thirty minutes at thirty dollars makes five hours tend to read as something close to ten times that. Once the reading sets there, the price of the main offer can only be accounted for by volume. Depth is not volume, so thickening the substance gives the price little ground.
Making an entrance smaller runs two ways: cut by quantity, or cut by range. The two give opposite results. Cut by quantity and what you hand over reads as a shrunken version of the full thing, which fixes the price as a function of volume. Cut by range and the entrance, however narrow, is an experience at the full depth, so the price can be explained by depth. Which one you built was settled the moment the entrance was put together.

Placing the Trial Offer as “Collect at the Entrance, Recover on the Main Offer”
The construction in wide circulation describes the entrance’s role as connecting. What gets established by the entrance on its own is never asked.
Set the construction down accurately. Gather people with a low-priced entrance product and route them toward the main product. The entrance side runs thin, or at a loss. Recovery happens on the main side. Free samples, small trial quantities and low-priced first-time offers get cited as instances of the entrance.
The design guidance that recurs is to set the entrance price low and lower the barrier to use. Being easy to buy is itself a requirement of an entrance.
The account of the effect is clear too. Someone with whom a transaction has once closed is easier to reach with the next proposal. Presenting the main offer to someone who came through an entrance closes more often than presenting it cold. That gap is the reason for having an entrance at all.
The instances cited are a small sample of a supplement leading to a subscription, or a single dish at a restaurant leading to a return visit. The same construction works across industries.
As an observation, this holds. With an entrance, connection happens.
Nobody disputes that an entrance plays a connecting role. The slippage arrives when the description of the role gets used as the guidance for design. If connecting is the role, then the quality of an entrance is settled by the efficiency of connection alone. The substance of the entrance then gets designed as something that makes people want to proceed.
Something that makes people want to proceed and something that meets a need on its own are not the same. Some people’s needs being met is not the same as everybody’s being met. People not proceeding is a verdict rather than a loss. Designing to make people want to proceed is also an operation that weakens that verdict.
An entrance with a weakened verdict carries a further consequence. The number of people who dropped at the entrance becomes, as it stands, the record of failure. With no mechanism recording the reasons separately, the person who dropped because their need was met and the person who dropped because it was thin get counted as the same item. An operation aimed at reducing that number lands equally on both.
The shape of the record deciding the shape of the judgement applies here too. Two figures commonly used for assessing an entrance are the number who came through, and the proportion who converted. Both count only the side that proceeded. The side that dropped survives as a count and nothing else. Looking only at counts, occasions to ask what the drops were made of seldom arise.
What Is Actually Occurring in “Sell Cheaply and Be Seen as Cheap”
The phrase seen as cheap points at price bearing on assessment. The phenomenon is real, since price stands in for quality when material for judgement is scarce.
Price stands in for quality most strongly, though, where the object of comparison is settled. Cheap among the things on the same shelf carries the meaning cheap. With nothing standing beside it, what a price means is hard to settle.
The substance of seen as cheap is therefore not the absolute price. It is which set the price was read as a position within. Change the set and the same number means something else.
That structure is handled in not starting your pricing from cost. What settles a price is neither cost nor prevailing rates but the set of things it gets compared against.
What is specific to the trial offer is that this entrance builds the set of comparisons itself.
For someone in first contact, the entrance product is their first information about you. What is presented afterwards tends to get read against that first information. If the entrance looks level with other people’s entrances, the main offer gets read inside that level set too.
Does showing the main offer change the set? Sometimes it does. Changing it requires overwriting the set that was built first, and overwriting tends to cost more material than building did. A frame placed earlier tends to decide how later information gets read.
Nor does raising the entrance price change the set. Raise the number while the substance matches other entrances and you occupy a higher position inside the same set. What changes it is the moment the problem being handled and the angle on it read as different.
Treat seen as cheap as a pricing problem and the response is a price rise. A price rise is easy to execute and shows up in the figures at once. The figure that shows up is the raised price multiplied by the reduced count. If the product rises, the decision was correct. What the arithmetic leaves out is what the reduced count was made of. If the people who left were unsuitable, the sorting was working. If suitable people left, the set problem is unsolved.
The two cannot be told apart from records of price and count. Telling them apart requires knowing what the leaving side looked at before stepping back. And information about people who left does not stay with you. Not staying, the assessment of a price rise tends to run on the figures of those who remained.
Evaluated Alone, the Weight Shifts Toward the Attributes That Are Easy to Judge
The point about sets has backing from the side of judgement.
In a 1996 study, Christopher Hsee handled the conditions under which assessments reverse between evaluating options side by side and evaluating them alone (Hsee, 1996, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, 67(3), 247–257). Evaluating alone, people find it hard to place weight on attributes whose quality is hard to judge in isolation. Weight shifts toward the attributes that are easy to judge, and side-by-side evaluation restores it to the hard-to-judge ones.
Raising a price does not, on this basis, raise assessment. What was handled was the assessment of options in a bounded setting, and business dealings do not inherit the conditions directly. What transfers is the direction: the mode of evaluation changes which attributes carry weight.
Moved onto the trial offer, it reads like this. Someone in first contact is evaluating you alone, because they hold no object of comparison.
And the attributes that are easy to judge alone are few. Quantity, time, number of sessions, price. All countable. The hard-to-judge attributes are depth, precision, and how well the thing fits their situation. In a solo evaluation, little weight lands on the second group.
The consequence at the centre of this article follows. When the substance of the entrance is a thinned version of the real thing, what a solo evaluator can read is the countable attributes and nothing else. If the quantity is a tenth of the main offer, what gets read is the ratio one-tenth. Whether the depth matches is hard to judge, since there is nothing to compare against.
Conversely, when an entrance cuts by range and is built at the same depth as the main offer, the depth is still hard to read alone. What is read is the fact that they reached the end inside that range. A fact is not countable, so it does not enter the ratio. Not entering is where the advantage of this shape sits. With no ratio standing, the main offer’s price does not get estimated by a ratio.
The Hsee result carries one more implication for design. The moment a comparison partner is supplied, attributes that went unread alone come back into the evaluation. So if you want the quality of the entrance to carry, what you need is not an explanation of the price but an object of comparison. Rather than lining it up beside other entrances, line it up on the side of the problem being handled. Change what stands beside it and the attributes that get read change with it.
What to Drop from the Main Offer — Cut by Quantity or Cut by Range
There are two ways of dropping material from the main offer when building an entrance.
One cuts by quantity. Ten sessions become one. Five hours become thirty minutes. A treatment of the whole becomes an overview. The construction matches the main offer, and density and volume fall.
The other cuts by range. You take one part of the territory the main offer covers and run that part at the same depth as the main offer. The construction differs, and inside the part you cut, nothing is omitted.
From outside, both are the same cheap entrance. The difference emerges in what got experienced on the receiving side.
Cut by quantity and what the recipient experiences is a thinned version of the real thing. Someone handed something at lower density treats it as representative of the main offer, which is presumed to be more of the same.
Cut by range and what gets experienced is the quality of the real thing. Nothing is omitted inside the range, so that depth becomes the baseline, and the remaining territory is presumed to run at the same depth.
Cut by range and people will be satisfied by the cut portion alone — this worry lands. They will be. And some of the satisfied will have their need met there and not proceed. This actually happens.
Whether those people would have proceeded under a quantity cut, though, is far from certain. Under a quantity cut, the reason for not proceeding is it was thin. Under a range cut, the reason is it was enough. The non-proceeding is the same; what stayed with the person is different.
Not every product can be cut by range. Some are a single continuous thing, and taking a part out leaves nothing standing. Then cutting by quantity is the only option. Whether you know you are handing over a quantity cut changes what follows.
Knowing it, the option appears of supplementing the entrance’s position with an explanation: this is a thinned portion of the whole, and the density differs in the main offer. Stated, it carries that what was experienced is not representative. Without knowing, no such correction happens. With no correction and a result of seen as cheap, the cause gets attributed to price. The actual cause is the cut, and the response starts on the pricing side.
The two ways are indistinguishable once made. The fact that the volume is smaller than the main offer holds in both cases. Telling them apart means looking at whether anything is omitted inside the range you cut. Omission means a quantity cut; none means a range cut. Only someone who knows the substance of the main offer can run that test.
Hand Over a Shrunken Copy and the Main Offer’s Price Becomes a Function of Time
Once the presumption holds, the next judgement follows. The amount payable for more of the same gets estimated as a ratio of quantity. The ten-times estimate from the ratio of thirty minutes to five hours sets here. At the moment that reading holds, the price of the main offer has become a function of time.
Once it is a function, the ground for raising the price that survives is almost only increasing the time. Deepen the substance and little registers, because the function has no variable for depth. With little registering, the return on the work of deepening drops out of sight.
And increasing time has a limit, since the hours available to the person delivering are finite. Once a price can rise only by increasing a finite resource, the ceiling of that business is set by working hours. The same ceiling, dissected from the side of working hours, is sell by time and your income ceiling is set by your working hours.
Under a range cut, no ratio stands. The cut range is a part of the main offer, and because it is complete inside itself, there is no way to count it as a fraction of anything. Not countable, the price does not come out of time.
No ratio standing comes at the cost of legibility. This is a third of the whole is the clearer explanation. A range-cut entrance needs a separate account of where in the whole it sits, and the explaining costs effort.
The difference in workload also favours the quantity cut, since shortening something that already exists is all it takes. Cutting by range requires first dividing the structure of the main offer, and dividing means reviewing the design of the main offer itself.
That difference in workload often settles the choice of cut in practice. The decision tends to run on ease of starting more than on effect. And a quantity-cut entrance can always be built, so the problem never shows up in the form of something you failed to build.
The account of a price rise can then stand only on the side of volume. The same time, more deeply carries poorly, because the material for comparison is not in the other person’s hands. What carries more easily is we added sessions and we extended the time.
And each repetition of that account fixes the function more firmly, since every price explained by volume accumulates as further backing for it. Change the cut of the entrance later and it reaches people whose reading has already set only weakly; it reaches the people arriving next more easily.
What Cutting by Range Consists Of, and the Tension It Always Produces
Cutting by range runs in two stages.
The first stage divides the territory the main offer covers into independent parts. Independent means that running that part alone produces a result. A part that presumes the completion of other parts is not independent.
Whether the division is possible depends on the design of the main offer. If it is not, the main offer has a continuous structure. Force a cut through a structure that does not divide and the cut face is left exposed.
The second stage selects which of the divided parts to hand over. The criterion here is not only whether the part stands alone. It is whether someone who experiences that part can recognise that the remaining territory exists.
Without that recognition, the part handed over is taken for the whole, and the main offer gets read as more of the same. With it, the part sits as one location inside a whole.
The two conditions stand in tension. Push a part toward standing alone and it closes. A closed part makes its position in the whole harder to show. Push toward showing the position and references to the remainder increase, and the part edges toward being a lead-in.
The tension does not resolve. It is the kind of thing you can only lean one way on. Which way to lean is settled by how many entrances the business needs. With one entrance, standing alone takes priority. With several, one of them may prioritise position.
One objection is that whether the division is possible cannot be known without trying. It can be judged in advance to a degree. List what the main offer covers first. If that is establishing shared groundwork or an overview of the whole, the main offer has a continuous structure. If the first material produces a result in itself, it divides.
The criterion for selection carries an easily missed point. The part to hand over is not the highest-value part of the main offer. Hand over the highest-value part and the remainder tends to look light.
What to select is the part that stands alone and, once experienced, makes the remaining territory visible. In most cases that part sits in the middle of the main offer rather than at the start, because the start goes to shared groundwork and does not stand alone.
Cut out the middle and the groundwork from the start is needed to receive it. Supply the groundwork and the entrance gets longer. A longer entrance loses its passability as an entrance. Here again, the two conditions point opposite ways.
The Free Range Is Counted Back from the Understanding the Next Stage Requires
The question how far into my own offering do I give away free has no answer as long as it is framed as a quantity.
It has none because quantity carries no criterion. Give more and confidence grows; give too much and there is nothing left to sell. Both are true, so there is no axis on which to compare them.
Change the axis. Count back from the level of involvement the next stage requires.
To make a judgement about the main offer, the other person has to hold a certain understanding. Present the main offer without it and the judgement runs on peripheral handles. A judgement made on handles is not a judgement about the substance. That structure is handled in the principles of funnel design.
The range to hand over free, then, is the range that establishes the understanding the main judgement requires. Narrower and the judgement runs on handles. Wider and the quality of the judgement improves little.
The advantage of this criterion is that it can be tested by whether something is established rather than by volume. Does someone who received the range come back with questions about the substance when they hear the main offer explained? If so, the understanding is established. If only questions about terms come back, it is not.
Hand over the understanding the main judgement requires and you hand over most of the main offer — this concern comes up often. Not necessarily, because the understanding needed to judge and the understanding needed to execute are different things. Between grasping what kind of structure the problem has and how it resolves, and being able to resolve it against your own situation, there is distance.
For products where that distance is short, the range does approach the main offer. A short distance also means the main offer is delivering little. In that case the problem sits with the main offer rather than with the free range.
The length of the distance varies enormously by field. Where the procedure is clear and knowing it means being able to do it, the distance is short. Where the thing is composed of a sequence of judgements, it is long. Apply the same criterion and the range that comes out differs.
Settle the range by this criterion and the volume moves upward, because the understanding needed to judge is usually broader than assumed. A broader entrance costs more to build, and the return on the added cost does not appear in the figures quickly, since a rise in the quality of judgement cannot be observed on the spot.
What can be observed is the fall in mismatches after people proceed. Unsuitable people stop entering. That shows up as a fall in counts, so in the short run it reads as deterioration. Changing the reading requires records that extend to what happened after people proceeded. With the recording ending at the entrance, this assessment cannot be made.
When the Trial Offer Becomes a Lead-In, What Gets Experienced Is Suspension
A typical failure shape is an entrance whose substance is organised toward the announcement of the main offer.
In that state, the person tends to sense throughout the entrance that something is being withheld. Once they know something is withheld, attention turns toward it. The material in front of them gets read as a preamble to what is being withheld.
Material read as a preamble tends not to stay with the person, because a preamble’s job ends when the main body arrives.
The state of someone who has come through such an entrance is then this. Interest in you is present, and understanding of the problem being handled has not increased. Present the main offer to someone holding interest alone and interest is the only material for judgement.
The structure in which a judgement gets settled by a reason supplied from outside is handled in a product launch supplies the reason to buy now from outside. A lead-in entrance runs the same structure on the pricing side.
Without telling people the main offer exists, does anybody proceed to it? Telling and leading in are different. Telling them it exists takes one mention. It becomes a lead-in when the substance of the entrance is itself constructed as a connection to the main offer.
The test is simple. Remove every mention of the main offer from the entrance. If the substance still stands, it is not a lead-in. If it does not, that substance existed for the connection.
Standing after removal does not mean the main offer is unnecessary. What someone needs next after receiving an entrance that stands depends on their situation. People turning out not to need it is the design working correctly.
An entrance organised as a lead-in looks well-built from the making side. Each part connects to the next and the construction wastes nothing. Nothing is wasted because everything points at one purpose.
An entrance that stands alone, by contrast, looks loose. It has parts that do not connect onward, and parts that do not connect onward become candidates for deletion as design faults. Repeat the deletions and the entrance returns to being a lead-in. Each decision along the way has the correct shape of removing waste. The structure changes through an accumulation of correct decisions, so the point at which it changed is hard to locate.
Someone who has experienced suspension expects suspension the next time they receive anything. The expectation tends to survive a change in the entrance. That is why fixing the structure takes time to show an effect.
Why the Trial Offer’s Price Cannot Be Settled from Cost or from Prevailing Rates
The entrance price does not come out of either default method.
Costing does not work because an entrance is deliberately designed to run thin. The procedure of adding a margin to cost has been abandoned at the entrance from the start.
Prevailing rates do not work because this entrance builds the set of comparisons itself. Matching the prevailing rate means entering a set that already exists, and the main offer gets read inside that set too.
So what settles it is the role the entrance price is playing.
The role is twofold. First, producing a judgement. Something handed over free carries no decision to receive it. Attach a price and the decision whether to pay arises. Something received through a decision gets treated differently from something received without one.
Second, sorting. A price separates those who have reached the stage of paying money for the problem from those who have not. Whether that separation is needed depends on the nature of the main offer.
Seen through the two roles, the level of the price starts from the minimum at which a decision arises. A reason to go higher exists where sorting is needed. Go higher without needing to sort and a decision still arises, and fewer people come through.
Attaching a price to an entrance creates, on the receiving side, an axis of assessment: is the substance worth this money? That axis does not exist when the thing is free. The axis favours a range-cut entrance, because depth becomes the baseline. It works against a quantity-cut entrance, since a price attached to something thin makes the thinness stand out. The same pricing decision works in opposite directions depending on the cut.
Against this stands the point that making it free maximises the count. It does. And within the maximised count, the proportion actually working on the problem falls, because with no decision arising, no sorting arises either.
The fall in that proportion carries into every stage that follows: response to what you send, response to the presentation of the main offer, the substance of the deals that close. Lower the proportion upstream and every downstream figure tends to fall. And downstream figures get treated as downstream problems.
None of this says free is always worse. Where the audience has not yet recognised the problem, asking for money makes contact itself unlikely, since the operation of producing a decision only works after the problem has been recognised. An entrance placed before recognition and one placed after it need designing as different things.
What the People Who Did Not Proceed from the Trial Offer Said When They Did Not
Whether the entrance worked shows up not in the number who proceeded but in the words of those who did not. Three places carry it.
First, the substance of the questions from someone who has heard the main offer explained. How does this part work in my case, does this premise hold for me. Questions about substance mean the understanding is established. Questions about price and duration alone mean the judgement is about to run on the terms.
Second, what the people who did not proceed said as they did not. I do not need it yet means they could judge their own situation. Stopping at let me think about it a bit more means the material for judging was short. The non-closing is the same; the first is often a sign of the entrance working and the second of it failing.
Third, whether someone who took only the entrance comes back later through a different entrance. Coming back means the entrance left something in them. Ending at one pass means what you handed over was consumed on the spot. This check takes time, and other indicators substitute for it poorly.
The number who moved across appears in none of the three. A conversion rate turns two different events into the same figure. Someone who proceeded with the understanding established and someone who proceeded on interest raised by a lead-in count as the same item. The higher the second proportion, the worse the state after the main offer is received tends to be, and that worsening does not appear in the conversion rate.
Two of the three come with a recording condition. The words of people who did not proceed, and the fact of someone returning later, survive only if you ask. With an entrance designed for connection alone, the route for that record never gets built. Not built, the material for the verdict does not become available. Whether someone who came through the entrance continues is handled in the conditions under which a second purchase happens.
What to charge for the entrance never surfaced anywhere above. Neither did the breadth of the range nor the placement of the mention. What settles the level is the nature of what the main offer delivers and where the minimum for producing a decision sits, and neither prevailing rates nor cost enters it.
The observation this article set out from was one price receiving two treatments. What differed was not the price but what got experienced for it. Cut by quantity and a thinned version of the real thing is experienced; cut by range and the quality of the real thing is. And where evaluation happens alone, weight lands only on the countable attributes.
Change the order of one reading. Take your current entrance, remove every mention of the main offer, and read what remains. Whether what remains meets somebody’s need on its own. If it does not, what you were handing over was not substance but connection. Where what was handed over turns out to be the connection rather than the content, what sits first is the main offer. The question of what gets placed first is in the funnel as a whole.
