Introduction: Why the Skilled Look the Most Anxious

Learn a trade of your own and you will never go hungry. An old prescription against anxiety about the future. Acquire a sure skill and you will get by anywhere; you can live without depending on a company. So many people take certifications and polish specialised skills, aiming at a trade of their own. And yet — have you not seen the sight of someone who has acquired high skill looking, somehow, more anxious than anyone?

Plenty of people are looking for concrete ways to learn a trade. What this article examines is the premise beneath it: where the exit that a trade of your own truly points to actually lies, and why polishing skills alone cannot reach that exit.

Let me give the conclusion first. The exit from career anxiety lies not in raising the price tag on your labour power but in stepping off the side that has a price tag attached at all. It is moving, little by little, from the position of forever selling labour power to the position of holding your own means of production.

Raising the Price Tag and Stepping Off the Side That Has One Are Different

The deepest root of career anxiety lay in the structural condition that you hold nothing to sell but labour power — cut off from the means of production, the ground that produces value, and holding no way to live but to sell labour power. As long as this root is untouched, pile up certifications as you will, repeat job changes as you will, the anxiety returns in a changed form.

So the exit must head for this root itself. One who sells labour power cannot decide its price themselves. The market, the buyer, decides it. So when what the market seeks changes, your value wavers at once. This wavering was the epicentre of career anxiety. But move to the side that holds its own means of production and you come, little by little, to take part in deciding the price. What, to whom, and how you deliver — you can decide these yourself. Being swayed whole by the market’s fluctuations, life and all, ceases. The epicentre itself grows quiet.

What a trade of your own truly pointed to was this direction. Only, it is not acquiring labour power that sells higher, but stepping down, little by little, from the very position of selling labour power.

The Means of Production Can Now Be Held by an Individual

Say hold the means of production and many picture a factory, machines, vast land. Once, indeed, holding the means of production required enormous capital. So for most people it was out of reach.

But the modern digital economy changed this premise. Now, with a single computer and the right knowledge, an individual can build a mechanism for delivering their own value and accumulating it. Transmit your own view of the world, connect with those who resonate with it, and accumulate that relationship. This is, in the present age, a digital means of production.

What changes most in this shift is the meaning of time. While you sell labour power, your time is exchanged for assignments. You earn as much as you work. So stop working and the income stops. Under this flow-type income, anxiety never disappears. But build your own means of production and accumulate value there, and what you once built generates value and builds up even during the hours you are not working. It is the sense of a stock growing. When this sense is born, that chronic anxiety about next month grows quiet, little by little.

▸ This root of the non-ownership of the means of production, seen from the side of how we work, is treated in “I don’t want to work” is not indulgence.

Begin From “What You Already Have,” and Step Down From Comparison

When you build your means of production, where you place the starting point is decisive. Here you must choose a starting point the exact opposite of the anxiety industry’s.

The anxiety industry always began from lack. So when you build your own means of production, if you are not careful you are dragged into the same thinking of deficiency: I must acquire more skills. So reverse the starting point. Begin not from lack but from what you already have. What you have experienced in the life you have lived. What you know a little more of than others. What someone has thanked you for. By an outside ruler these tend to be deemed worthless, but your means of production grow not from deficiency-fillers bought from outside but from these, the things you already have.

And what will always stand in the way is comparison. That person earns more, has gone further ahead — this comparison drags you, trying to begin from what you already have, back again and again to still not enough. To step down from comparison does not mean to stop measuring. The question is by what you measure. The ruler of comparison measures you by your distance from others. The ruler after you step down measures you by your distance from where you yourself are heading. The former is a ceaselessly swaying ruler whose answer changes when the other party changes. The latter is an unswaying ruler based on your own goal. To move the standard of measure from others to your own goal — that is what it is to step down from comparison.

Look at the Side Effects Honestly

To speak as though this road had no side effects would be dishonest. Let me, honestly, name three.

First, anxiety does not fall to zero. As long as you live, the uncertainty of the future remains. Only, the remaining anxiety is not anxiety supplied from outside and ceaselessly restocked but the natural uncertainty that remains after you have taken the helm yourself. Second, the shift takes time. A certification can be taken in a few months, but building the means of production is a slow undertaking. Only, we already know that relief obtained fast runs out fast. What is built over time is what endures over time and remains. Third, when you let go of the outside ruler, unsteadiness comes first. Let go of the familiar ruler of market value and your footing suddenly feels unreliable. But that unsteadiness is not evidence that this road is wrong; it is the withdrawal symptom that always comes when you release something you have long depended on from outside. As your own ruler grows within, it fades.

I do not hide the side effects because I want you to choose in full awareness. Hidden side effects turn, later, into betrayal. But side effects taken on knowingly do not betray you. They are part of the road, within what you expected.

Conclusion: The First Step Toward the Source of the Fire Is Already Within You

What a trade of your own truly pointed to was not raising the price tag on labour power but stepping off the side that has one attached, and moving to the side that holds its own means of production. This is not a story of stopping learning. Learning chosen by your own ruler, for the direction you yourself are heading, may become more necessary than ever. Only, that learning is no longer water for putting out a fire but has become nourishment for you yourself.

This article is not a detailed manual. That I did not hand you a sequence of first do this, then that was deliberate. To sell a detailed sequence as the next lack to be filled is exactly the method this book has criticised. What I handed you is not a map but a compass. Where to take the concrete first step, you yourself can choose, within your own situation. There is no need to hurry. And the power to take that step is already within you. The power to see, to question, to choose — you had only been made to forget how to use them, amid the ceaseless supply of anxiety. Receive the overall blueprint as your next step. How this exit works across career anxiety as a whole is gathered in why career advancement never quiets your anxiety about the future.
