Introduction: The Question Behind the Backlash Guides

How to avoid provoking a pile-on, and what to do once one starts, are already well documented. What this article takes up is the question in front of that. Why is it conflict and anger, above everything else, that get carried furthest?

Endless advice exists on handling the aftermath, and this one point — why the most combustible material is distributed preferentially — is usually skipped. Skip it and you land, almost inevitably, on a conclusion about character: a failure of decorum, a decline in public manners, a coarsening of the times.

Here is the conclusion first. Combustible topics travel because a criterion that maximises the volume of response distributes them that way — not because anyone wanted them to. It is not a matter of character or of the mood of the age. It is a consequence of how distribution is designed.

The Criterion Does Not Ask What Kind of Feeling

Platforms run a mechanism that decides which of an enormous number of posts to show, to whom, and how much. Since showing everything to everyone is impossible, some criterion must select and allocate.

That criterion is not depth of worldview, not sincerity, not social value. It is the sum of response — clicks, dwell time, comments, shares. Material with large response is judged valuable and distributed more widely. Material with small response has its allocation squeezed and sinks without reaching anyone.

Here is the point that gets overlooked. The mechanism does not ask what kind of feeling produced the response. Whether it was constructive or corrosive, sincere or inflammatory, is not assessed. It reads only whether the response was large, and amplifies what is large.

And human attention is drawn instinctively to anger, anxiety, conflict and indignation.

Put those two together — a criterion indifferent to the quality of feeling, and attention that leans towards strong feeling — and the result follows automatically: material framed around conflict is carried furthest.

No one decided to increase conflict. Pursuing an objective that is, in itself, entirely rational — maximise the volume of response — produces this. The structure is there regardless of intent.

The Same Phenomenon, Seen from the Writer’s Side

This design acts on the person writing, not only on the person reading.

A measured post that acknowledges both sides generates far less response than a categorical one that names an enemy and sounds an alarm. And because the second performs, the pull to use it again is immediate.

Yet the writer usually knows. It was not the shape of what they actually wanted to say. Their own view was more involved, more double-edged, not reducible to a single line. Written out carefully, the involved parts dull the response. Strip them away, sharpen the opposition, state it flatly, and the response rises.

And so the complexity of a person’s own view is handed over, a little at a time, in exchange for response.

Worth stressing: this does not happen only to inflammatory people. You need not be one at all. Keep writing under a criterion that maximises the volume of response, and your hand reaches structurally for whatever provokes.

Why “Just Be Careful” Does Not Work

If you know that, be careful is a reasonable thought. It does not work.

The reason is that this pull operates on the layer of behaviour rather than the layer of awareness. Behavioural analysis established a well-known finding: reinforcement delivered on an unpredictable schedule produces the most durable behaviour [Skinner, 1938]. Whether a given post performs cannot be known in advance. This is a near-perfect implementation of variable reinforcement.

And the format of the posts that performed is inscribed as behaviour bound to reward. When you next sit down to write, your hand reaches for that format not because you decided anything but because the behaviour has been reinforced.

Intention sits on the layer of thought; variable reinforcement acts on the layer of behaviour. The layers differ, so intention slips past. “Being careful” is aimed at the wrong layer altogether.

Not Being the One Who Lights It, or the One Who Burns

Seen this way, the relationship to backlash changes.

Most guidance on the subject is written at the level of expression: avoid these phrasings, soften those. That is useful, and it is not the root. The root is that the place you are standing on allocates by volume of response. While you stand there, you carry both the incentive to be the one lighting fires and the exposure to being the one who burns.

To be clear: this article does not cast platforms as villains. Maximising response is rational for a business that sells attention; there is no need to assume malice. The problem is the single fact that this rationality answers to an objective function different from the writer’s.

The question, then, is not how do I soften my phrasing but on what criterion is the place that carries my words allocating them? On a path that reaches readers directly — where arrival is not decided by the volume of response — this pull does not arise. The reason to lean towards strong feeling is structurally absent.

Only then can you stop working at “how not to catch fire”. The work becomes unnecessary not because you have grown more temperate but because you have stepped away from the mechanism that lights the match.

Conclusion: Not a Question of Character but of Criteria

That anger and conflict travel furthest is not evidence of a coarsening society or of writers with worse morals. It is the result of a criterion that maximises the volume of response, amplifying without asking what kind of feeling produced it.

And while you write under that criterion, your own hand moves structurally in the same direction. That is not weakness of will; it is the consequence of a design acting on the layer of behaviour.

The exit is not in softening how you say things. It is in moving the centre of gravity to a place where the criterion of distribution is different in kind.

The whole picture is gathered in why blogging longer leaves less of your own voice. On the distribution mechanism itself, see the more you master the algorithm, the more it corrects you; on where the maximised metric comes from, whose objective function is engagement?.
