The More You Master the Algorithm, the More It Corrects You

Introduction: What Mastery Actually Means

How to master the algorithm, and how to respond to the latest change in its rules, are already well documented. What this article takes up is the meaning of mastery itself. What, concretely, are you doing when you master it?

Countermeasures are discussed endlessly, and one point is almost never raised: what happens to the person who succeeds at mastering it.

Here is the conclusion first. To master it is to fit yourself to the criteria of whoever decides distribution. And the more closely you fit, the further the origin of your expression moves from the inside to the outside. The better you master it, the deeper the movement. That is what makes this structure difficult.

What the Algorithm Is Doing

First, precisely. The algorithm here is the mechanism that decides which of an enormous number of posts to show, to whom, and how much.

Everything published in a day cannot be shown to everyone, so some criterion must select and allocate. That allocation is made automatically.

On what basis? Depth of worldview? Sincerity? No. The basis is the sum of response: clicks, completion, comments, shares, dwell time.

Why that criterion? Because the platform earns by selling collected attention as advertising. Large response means more attention drawn in and a higher price. Maximising it is entirely rational as a business.

There is no malice in this — only a mismatch of objective functions. What is being maximised is response, not the worldview you want to convey. The two sometimes coincide but are different in kind, and when they diverge — when the thing you most want to say happens not to generate response — that sentence sinks quietly.

Mastery Means Fitting Yourself to the Criterion

So what does mastering this mechanism consist of?

Analysing which angles drew response and applying that next time. Identifying the format that performed and reproducing it. Tracking rule changes and switching to the new winning line. All of it is the work of bringing your output closer to the criteria of whoever decides distribution.

At a glance this looks entirely sound. Look at the response, apply what worked. It is the improvement cycle recommended in every field.

But there is one decisive difference from ordinary improvement. In ordinary improvement, the standard of what counts as good sits in your own hands. When you improve at cooking, the standard of delicious is your own palate. Here, the standard itself is supplied from outside.

On ground where getting closer to that standard counts as improvement, improvement and the movement of the origin become the same process. The better the craft, the further the origin. That paradox is the substance of mastery.

Why the Movement Cannot Be Noticed

The movement has two awkward properties.

It is continuous, so it cannot be noticed. The origin does not leap outwards one day. It shifts a fraction with each piece. Today’s is a shade further out than yesterday’s, and the difference is too small for the person writing to perceive.

Picture a ship whose helm turns a single degree each day. Within any one day the course looks straight. Keep that single degree up for several hundred days and the ship is in an entirely different sea. Asked which day’s steering was wrong, no one can answer. Every day was very nearly straight.

What makes it worse is that the small concession is never reversed. Nobody deliberately pulls an origin back inwards after nudging it out. Out performs better. With no incentive to return, the origin drifts in one direction only.

It comes with improvement. If conforming to the outside lowered results, people would turn back immediately. The reality is the reverse. The process by which the origin leaves your hands is experienced, on the surface, as growth. So it does not stop; if anything it accelerates.

“Then Don’t Master It” Is Not Enough

So don’t master it — write only what you want to write. Reasonable, and it does not work.

The reason is that the selection operates independently of your awareness. Even if you never studied the rules at all, what selects which of your posts reach readers and which do not is still the same mechanism.

And people learn from what reached. Experiences that drew response are retained; those that did not are forgotten. Without any deliberate analysis, the record of what landed and what did not accumulates in the body. That accumulation quietly directs what you write next.

This is why don’t master it is not enough. The problem is not that you study the mechanism. The problem is the single fact that your publishing happens on ground where distribution is held by someone else.

Trying to resist by intention is like standing against a current. You can hold your footing while you hold it. But the whole time you are spending strength, and the moment your feet stop you are carried.

Stepping Outside the Question of Mastery

The question, then, is neither how do I master it nor how do I refrain from mastering it. It is: on what criterion is the place that carries my words allocating them?

On a path that reaches readers directly — where contact details entrusted to you deliver your words without a gatekeeper — this corrective pressure is structurally absent. Because arrival is not decided by a distribution mechanism, the reason to fit yourself to its criteria simply disappears.

To be explicit: this is not a method for holding your footing in the current. It is a method for leaving the water. The origin stays inward not because you have acquired a stronger will but because you have moved to a place where the wind pulling it outwards does not blow.

Conclusion: Not the Quality of the Mastery, but the Design of the Place

That mastering the algorithm corrects your worldview is not a sign that you are doing it badly. It is that mastery, by definition, is the work of fitting yourself to an external criterion.

Those who master it best have fitted themselves most closely. Which is why no amount of additional skill gets you out of this structure.

The only way out is to move the centre of gravity to a place where the criterion of distribution is different in kind.
