Who Distributes the Question

Check This Before Debating When the Singularity Lands

Introduction: The Question in Front of the Forecasts

What year the singularity arrives, and what happens when it does, already have no shortage of forecasts. What this article takes up is the question in front of that. Through whom, and in what form, is that forecast reaching you?

Endless material exists on timing, and this one point — why this subject is distributed so persistently — is usually skipped.

Here is the conclusion first. A question that arrives in the form of do not get left behind is always connected to someone’s interest. Not through conspiracy, but as rational commercial design. What is worth checking is not the year but what you accumulate, and whose assets you thicken, by answering it.

Why It Is Framed as Loss Rather Than Gain

This subject has a consistent register. What you stand to lose is emphasised over what you stand to gain.

The reason is clear. Behavioural economics finds that people place substantially greater psychological weight on avoiding a loss than on securing an equivalent gain [Kahneman & Tversky, 1979, Econometrica]. What you will lose by falling behind moves people more forcefully than what you will gain by adopting.

This is a response common to the species and predictable from cognitive science. Which is why there is no need to carry this urgency as a personal failing. It is not aimed at anyone in particular; it presses accurately on a habit of human response.

What is worth resisting is not the urgency itself but the framing of the question that makes use of it.

Every Time You Answer, a New “Behind” Is Created

There is a second structure embedded in the phrase. Act on it, and a next falling-behind is generated without fail.

Acquire tool A and B appears. Before B is finished, C is in circulation. Learning so as not to be left behind has, by its nature, no end.

Anxiety, action, temporary relief, new anxiety. The loop functions as sustained motivation to acquire. And with each acquisition, dependence on a new tool deepens.

What began as learning something new makes me feel secure becomes not being able to settle unless I am learning. The supply of reassurance shifts from inside you to whatever comes next, from outside.

The Same Words Were Distributed Before

The form is not new.

When social platforms first spread, the same words circulated: do not get left behind; start now or it will be too late. And the destination for many who answered was a contest over follower counts.

What accumulated there — whose asset did it become? The numbers were tied to accounts on the platform. Terms changed and conditions changed with them. When a service changed direction, reach changed. The hours individuals put in did produce something; the right to administer what was produced never sat on the individual’s side.

What repeats through history is not the technology but the form of the question.

Who Gains From This Register

Put the question directly: who gains most when this subject is widely distributed?

There is a clear answer. The companies developing and supplying the underlying technology.

As you will fall behind if you do not use it spreads, user numbers rise. As user numbers rise, so do subscription revenue, interface usage fees, and the value of the data that accumulates.

Seen through strategic management, the structure sharpens. In Michael Porter’s analysis, the bargaining power of suppliers is one determinant of an industry’s profitability [Porter, 1980]. The more widely the belief spreads that you lose the competition without it, the stronger the supplier’s bargaining position. A user who feels there is no alternative has little resistance to changes in price or terms.

Further, material and data produced with these tools frequently feed the improvement of the models. The effort of using them hard so as not to fall behind contributes to raising the value of the supplier’s product.

This Is Rational Business, Not a Conspiracy

Let this be explicit. This article does not criticise the companies supplying the technology.

Building a structure in which many people depend on your foundation is a textbook route to a durable revenue base. It is a natural corporate judgement, and there is no need to assume malice.

The technology itself is also neutral. Generative AI is an instrument that works in opposite directions depending on position. It is neither a thing to oppose nor a thing to revere.

If there is an object of criticism, it is neither the technology nor the companies but the state of accepting the register without noticing it, and deferring the question of your own economic position.

“Open a Shop on Our Land, Quickly”

Restated, the call amounts to this: open a shop on our land, and be quick about it.

Opening a shop is not itself a problem. The problem is building every shop on someone else’s land without holding a single plot of your own.

While you are a tenant, the rent and the opening hours are decided by the landlord, not by you. If notice to vacate arrives, you comply.

The question worth checking, then, is not when does it arrive but this. If that tool disappeared, would my economic structure keep functioning?

Hold ground that functions outside the foundation — a direct relationship with readers that does not pass through a mechanism — and the tool can be used as one option. Without that ground, the tool becomes a necessity. And the supplier of a necessity has pricing power. You do not.

Conclusion: Not the Year, but Where the Question Came From

What year the singularity arrives has, honestly, almost no bearing on an individual’s economic position. Arriving or not, while you stand on the side without means of production, the conditions are not set by you.

What is worth checking first is not the timing but who distributes the question, and whose assets thicken when it is answered.

The urgency is not a matter of temperament. It is the consequence of a design pressing accurately on a habit of human response. And the way to resist a design is not to run faster but to make the choice of where you run your own.

The whole picture is gathered in why generative AI fluency does not settle next month; what switching to a newer competence resolves in one thing to check before learning prompt engineering; whose foundation what you build sits on in whose foundation is what you built with no-code on?
