There are meetings several times a week. You know others in the same trade, and they reply when you get in touch. Conversations at home run normally. Measured as volume of conversation, nothing is missing. Even so, the moment you sit back down at the desk, a hard-to-describe thinness of company is still there.
What comes back under freelance loneliness leans toward one direction. Use a co-working space. Join a community of people in the same trade. Put regular meetings with people into the calendar. Get the rhythm of the day in order. The same answers appear in either language, with a passage about the effects on health attached. These remedies genuinely work. It is only that who they work for is fixed.
One point goes first. This article does not proceed towards the claim that loneliness left alone becomes dangerous. Enlarging the side that alarms produces movement without producing understanding of what is happening. The subject is a separation: inside the single word loneliness, a part that contact reduces and a part that contact does not reduce sit together.
Research on loneliness split this state into two types early on. What that pair of types addresses, though, is the relational side, and where the judgements of a business get made falls under neither of them. What people working alone report includes a portion that sits outside both types.
The scope is narrow. How judgement itself gets rebuilt sits outside this article. The relation between perception and action is handled by Reading unable to change through cognitive science, and the inside of being unable to decide by The structure of being unable to decide. What is placed here goes as far as splitting the reported state in two and checking what acts on each.
A public survey carries one figure that supports the separation. On a contract that counts as a heavy decision, the share of people in Japan who went through anyone before deciding stays at a few per cent, several times to more than ten times below the same question in the United States. An account based on having nobody to consult does not read that gap.
The route runs as follows. It begins with the observation that a part does not fall with the amount of contact. It then checks the two types research uses and looks at what those types do not cover. On that basis it separates the range of the offered remedies from what the act of consulting actually moves. The second half places the finding that heavier decisions go through fewer consultations, splits the two shortages folded into “having nobody to consult,” and closes with how to check your own position.

Company Does Not Remove All of It
The volume of conversation and the weight of this state do not correspond directly. If anything it comes out strongly right after seeing people.
People who have carried out the remedies are the ones who notice the mismatch. Start using a co-working space and you have people to talk to. Join a gathering of people in the same trade and you can speak with others in the same position. That day is genuinely lighter, and the next morning at the desk, what lies outside the lightened part is still there. What is left has no name, so it tends to get read as “still not enough.” The prescription then continues in the direction of going more often.
The shape of the remaining part is not hard to put into words. What has to be decided that afternoon has only you to decide it. Whether to raise the rate. Whether to take this enquiry. Whether to carry on with the thing half-made or stop. The person you consulted gives you material for the judgement. The judgement itself stays with whoever walks back to the desk.
If you have worked inside a company, the difference shows up as a comparison. You worked through the same worries there. The one deciding, though, was a manager. Consultation was the stage before a decision, and at the end someone signs it off. Once signed off, the account owed for the outcome sits with the person who signed. Consultation and decision sat with different people, and there was no need even to notice that.
Going independent gathers those two into one person. Consult, and the one who decides is still the person who consulted. The person consulted does not carry the outcome. Consulting someone who does not carry it is not pointless — as material it works perfectly well. What is left after the material has increased, though, has the same shape as before.
So the remedy of increasing the number of people you talk to has a clear range. Of the state called loneliness in one word, it acts accurately on the side that contact reduces, and does not touch the side where decisions have gathered. That it has not touched is invisible from outside. Meetings can be counted; where decisions have gathered cannot.
An objection follows: I decided alone inside the company too. With a title, you are on the signing side. Even there, though, the decision is not one person’s worth. The policy that frames the judgement has come down from above, and recovery when things go wrong is carried out by the organisation. The person who decided does not carry it as far as next month’s income.
There is also the matter of this state not appearing immediately after going independent. In the first year, most of what has to be decided points in the single direction of starting. Take it, make it, deliver it. There are many judgements and the width of hesitation is narrow. The width opens once choosing becomes possible. At the point where declining becomes a real option, the concentration of decisions is felt as weight for the first time. The order in which things get heavier as they go well comes from here.
Research on Loneliness Split Loneliness Into Two Types Early On
Loneliness tends to be handled as one state, while the research side split it in two half a century ago.
The sociologist Robert Weiss, in a 1973 work, divided loneliness into social isolation and emotional isolation (Weiss, R. S., Loneliness: The Experience of Emotional and Social Isolation, MIT Press, 1973). Social isolation arises from the absence of a group or circle you belong to. Newly arrived in an area, with people to speak to but no place of your own, is this state.
Emotional isolation arises from the absence of one closely bound person. Even surrounded by many people, if those people are not close ones for you, this isolation remains. What matters for this article is not the classification itself but the point that neither type substitutes for the other.
Not substituting means the following. A remedy that fills social isolation — entering a group, building a circle — does not resolve emotional isolation when applied to it. The reverse holds as well. Mixing with many does not fill the absence of a close person, and one close person does not fill the absence of a place to belong. More remedies leave the outcome unchanged if they land in the wrong place.
The classification doubles as an account of the offered remedies. Co-working spaces and trade communities are designed for social isolation. Make a place to belong, enter a circle of people in the same position. This corresponds cleanly to the first type. Carried out, that portion genuinely fills.
And why reports of “it filled and something remained” keep coming can be explained one step from the same classification. If what was addressed was the first and what remains is the second, going more often will not resolve it. Up to this point the classification accounts for it from inside.
What people working alone report, though, includes a portion that does not fit inside the second either. People who do have close relationships say the same thing. They speak with family, they have long-standing friends, and the thinness of company at the desk is still there. Weiss’s pair of types does not treat that shape directly.
Nothing here counts against the classification. The object it addresses is simply different. The pair organises what kinds of shortfall a person feels within relationships to others, and its object sits on the relational side. What someone running a business carries comes from their position within the work rather than from relationships. Reading something outside the classification as a flaw in it is less accurate.
There is a practical benefit in knowing the pair. If your state falls under one of them, the remedy is already established. No place to belong, and entering a circle acts on it; no close person, and building depth in a relationship acts on it. Leaving only the part that falls under neither makes the object of the work clear. What this article treats is the side that remains once the two have been subtracted.
Neither Type Includes the Judgements of the Work
What Weiss’s classification addresses is the shape of relationships with people. Breadth of relationship and depth of relationship. On those two axes, most of what is reported as loneliness can be accounted for.
What falls outside the account is the portion occurring on the side of role rather than relationship. What someone running a business alone carries is not a shortage of relationships but a state in which judgement has gathered into one place. What to make, what to price it at, who to aim it at, when to stop. The arrangement where the gathering point is only you does not change with breadth or depth of relationship.
This arrangement is invisible from the relational side. For someone with broad relationships and someone with deep ones alike, the judgements of the business gather in the same place. So thickening the relational side as a remedy does not move the gathering. It has not moved, and the remedy has been carried out correctly. That mismatch becomes the report that says nothing changed despite doing everything.
Three things hold the arrangement together. The first is concentration of decisions. You can consult several people; the decision returns to one place. The second is attribution of outcomes. Results of a decision, good and bad alike, return only to the person who made it. The third is slowness of return. For many judgements, whether they were right is not clear for months or years.
The third is easy to overlook relative to how strongly it acts. For the period between making a judgement and the result returning, that judgement stays suspended. Inside a company, other people are looking at the same case during the suspension. Working alone, the only holder for that period is you. The total being held is what gets felt, in the course of a day, as thinness of company.
I met an extreme form of the third while trying to live on composing. You send a track to a competition. The result comes back as a single line saying it was not selected. The reasons, including how it differed from what was chosen, are never passed to your side at all. The next week you send again and it returns in the same shape. At the time I read the repetition as a shortfall in ability.
What was constant, looking back, was not ability but the condition that stops judgements accumulating. Results come back, and as material for judgement nothing comes back. The fact of not being selected does not settle what to change next. You are still the one deciding, so you keep deciding. A state of continuing to make judgements with no return holds independently of whether there is anyone to talk to.
Co-working Spaces and Trade Communities Act Accurately on One Side
The three that are offered are not off target. Their range is fixed, that is all.
What a co-working space moves is the state of having people in the same room. The rhythm of the day settles, mornings start earlier, and there are people to exchange small talk with. This corresponds to Weiss’s first type. Reports that this remedy worked are common, and it can work over a short period.
What a trade community moves is the state of being able to speak with people in the same position. A feel for going rates, examples of how others handle things, confirmation that your own judgement is not eccentric. Material for judgement is included here. So the effect of a community reaches both the social isolation side and the material side. Of the two remedies, this one has the wider range.
Getting the rhythm of the day in order is slightly different in nature. This does not act on loneliness itself but reduces the hours in which loneliness is felt strongly. The longer you work alone at night, the more the undecided judgements you are holding come into awareness. Shift the hours and the number of times they surface falls. What is being acted on is exposure rather than arrangement.
Passages about effects on health are attached frequently to the list of remedies. This article does not proceed in that direction. There are two reasons. One is that emphasising danger does not increase what a reader can do. The other is that even if the account is correct, what it addresses is still the first type. Raising the degree of seriousness does not move the arrangement in which decisions have gathered.
Placed together, the three share a feature. All of them operate on the amount of contact with people or the hours in which it occurs. And none of the three touches where decisions gather. Not touching is not a defect. The part that contact resolves is real, and these three resolve it fully.
So a report that something remains after carrying out the remedies does not indicate that the remedies failed. What was addressed was right, and what was not addressed remains. Someone who carried them out reads it as “these did not work for me” because both are being called by one word.
Of the three, the trade community is the one that needs care. A place where material can be obtained is also a place where standards of judgement align easily. When people in the same position share the same sense of going rates, judgements that depart from those rates become harder to put forward. An exchange can occur in which loneliness falls through contact and judgement moves that much towards other people.
The exchange does not necessarily occur. It occurs only where what was heard as material gets adopted as a standard. Knowing what others charge and making that figure your own standard are separate operations. The first is acquiring material; the second is handing over the standard. They occur consecutively in the same conversation, so they are hard to tell apart from outside and from inside.
There is one place where they separate. Whether you can state a reason for not adopting that figure. If you can, it is being used as material. If you cannot, the standard came with it. This test applies not to whether to join a community but to what was carried home after joining.
Consulting Increases Material and Does Not Move Where the Decision Sits
What the act of consulting actually moves is worth separating out.
What consulting increases is clear. Material for judgement. How others handled it, roughly where the going rate sits, which conditions you are missing. As material increases, the quality of judgement rises. The effect is real. Nothing here argues for consulting less.
What it does not increase is equally clear. Where the decision sits. Even when the person consulted says what they would do, whether to adopt it is decided by the person who consulted. And the result of adopting it returns only to them. Because the person consulted does not carry the outcome, one more judgement appears: how to weight the view of someone who does not carry it.
Consultation is asymmetric at this point. Material can be shared; responsibility cannot. Inside a company, consultation is designed as the stage before sign-off, so material and responsibility travel the same route. Working alone, the routes separate. Material comes in from outside and responsibility stays inside.
The asymmetry has nothing to do with how capable the person consulted is. If anything, the more capable they are, the more material increases and the more elements have to be decided. Three options appear, each with reasons attached, and all of them look sound. Judgement is harder than before the consultation, and the place where the decision sits is the same.
So the remedy of finding someone to consult acts on one side only. It acts on a shortage of material and not on the concentration of decisions. And the side it does not act on appears only after consulting. Before, the absence of a person looks like the problem. After, what remains is the fact that even with a person, you are the one deciding.
More material also carries one side effect. The options you did not take stay in memory. Before consulting, one path was visible. After, two unchosen ones remain. Because more alternative paths are available to refer to when a result turns out badly, the load that arrives after a decision can be larger for having consulted.
The side effect is not a reason to consult less. The gain in quality from more material can outweigh the increase in load. If you consult expecting relief, though, the absence of relief gets converted into “the wrong person” or “I am weak.” Placing the expectation on material rather than on relief prevents that misreading.
Heavier Decisions Are Made Without Passing Through Consultation
Consultation not being in the path of a judgement has been measured. And it shows up on heavy decisions rather than light ones.
A Cabinet Office report carries a comparison between Japan and the United States. The question asked whether people had consulted family, friends or a lawyer about a non-compete clause. In the United States, 18.34% had consulted someone. In Japan, 1.4% answered that they had, and 2.0% that they might have. The report itself states that in Japan this suggests the possibility that people enter into non-compete contracts on their own judgement, without consulting anyone (Cabinet Office, Director-General for Economic and Fiscal Analysis, “Policy Analysis Series 17: On Freelancers in Japan“, 2019).
The reach of the figure is narrow. What the question asks about is one specific contract, the non-compete clause. It is not a measure of consulting behaviour in general. Respondents include employed people. So no generalisation about self-employed people in Japan not consulting can be drawn from it.
Something can still be read. A non-compete clause governs whether later moves and later independence are possible. It is not a light decision. In the same survey, respondents in Japan report negotiating at a higher rate than those in the United States. The intention to negotiate is present, and consultation is not in the path. That combination is the shape the report points to.
The readable part connects to the subject here. Heavier decisions passing without consultation is not necessarily about having nobody available. It is that they are the kind of decision consultation does not settle. Whether to sign a non-compete depends on how that person’s future work is arranged. It is not the kind of question a friend holds an answer to.
Most business judgements have this shape. Whether to raise a rate depends on who you sell what to. Whether to decline this enquiry depends on the outlook for coming months and on the history with that party. What the person consulted holds is the answer for their own case, not one that holds under your conditions.
The frequency of consultation is therefore not an index of the amount of loneliness. Not having consulted does not mean nobody is available; in some cases it means carrying judgements that consultation does not settle. And the latter does not rise in frequency by adding people. What rises is the number of times you consulted and then decided alone anyway.
“Having Nobody to Consult” Names Two Shortages at Once
The phrase about having nobody to consult in fact bundles two separate things. Because they are bundled, filling one looks like filling both.
The first shortage is one of relationships. Few people to speak with at all. It occurs easily right after going independent, or right after moving, and entering a community genuinely fills it. For this shortage, the offered remedies act accurately.
The second is a shortage of people who share your conditions. There are people to speak with, but nobody who holds your conditions. The content of the work, the history with a client, how prices are set, how things are arranged going forward. Consult someone who does not know these, and explaining takes time while what comes back is general.
The second does not fill by raising the number of relationships. If anything, more people means more total explaining. Consult ten people and you explain the same premises ten times. By the time the explaining is done, things may have settled in your own mind and the other person’s answer is no longer needed. What worked in that case was not the consultation but the work of explaining.
That explaining works can be used on its own terms. In the course of conveying conditions to someone, the material for judgement gets laid out again on your side. Part of the value of consulting lies in that re-laying rather than in their answer. So the condition for choosing whom to consult is not whether they hold an answer but whether they are in a position to hear your conditions.
The second shortage also has a ceiling. In principle, the only person who holds your conditions completely is you. The history of transactions, the work declined, the reasons for not declining: all of it is held by one person. Someone in the same trade still has different conditions. A person who shares your conditions therefore exists only as an approximation.
Knowing the ceiling ends the search. The approximation — same position, similar scale, a relationship where conditions can be heard — is worth looking for; the complete version will not be found. Continuing to search for what does not exist is part of what the phrase folds in. Left folded, failing to fill it gets read as a personal failure in one’s relationships.
A reading appears that a paid adviser would fill it. The time spent explaining conditions genuinely shortens. Someone who listens as a professional holds a procedure for drawing out premises. That much works.
What does not shorten comes after. The conditions drawn out get organised to fit the frame of the person listening. Organising speeds up understanding and, in exchange, drops whatever part of your conditions does not fit the frame. What drops tends to be where the particulars of your case are concentrated. So paid consultation raises the quality of general judgements and makes less difference on judgements where particular conditions decide the answer.
Separating the two settles where to spend. In areas where the answer lies outside — procedures, regulations — asking is faster and more reliable. In areas where the answer lies inside your own conditions — what to make, who to aim at — asking still returns you to the same place at the end. Returning is not a failure. It was that kind of judgement.
Going Independent Did Not Create the Loneliness; Judgement Came Back
When people search under starting a business and loneliness, the causation is placed on the side of starting. Reversing the order changes what is visible.
Judgements existed during employment as well. Most of them, though, were settled somewhere other than where you sat. What to make was set, what to sell it for was set, who to sell it to was set. What was in hand was the work of raising precision inside settled conditions.
Going independent leaves those settled parts blank. A blank is a right to fill it and an obligation to fill it at once. These are the front and back of the same thing, and only one of them cannot be received. Being free to decide and having to decide are two names for one state.
So what increased on going independent is not loneliness but the volume of judgement that came back. Part of what is felt as loneliness is a response to that volume. The larger the volume, the more strongly the concentration of decisions is felt. And the volume rises as the business grows. Things going well and this feeling thinning out do not correspond.
There is a limit in this article here. Where the decision sits cannot be moved. Moving it would mean handing decisions to someone else, which approaches the state of not running a business. This portion of loneliness is therefore more accurately handled as a cost attached to the form than as something to be eliminated.
Handled as a cost, the handling changes. Rather than trying to reduce it, the direction becomes keeping it in a payable form. A payable form means a form in which judgements accumulate. If a judgement made can be referred back to later, the next judgement rests on it. Left unreferable, each decision starts from nothing and the volume stays while the load holds steady.
And this is also why contact does not move it. Seeing more people does not put the judgements you made into a referable form. Conversely, with few meetings, load falls if judgements are accumulating. Of what is reported as loneliness, this is the movable side. The handle is on the side of records rather than relationships.
Calling it a cost does not recommend continuing to pay it. A cost acts differently when you are aware of paying it and when you are not. A cost you are aware of becomes an object of estimation and can be compared against what it buys. A cost you are unaware of appears as expenditure with no identifiable source. At the same size, the second feels heavier.
The comparison is worth placing too. Return the decision to someone else and this cost falls, while the right to set conditions returns with it. Being employed is that exchange implemented as an institution. Which to choose sits outside this article. What can be said is that the two are the front and back of one quantity, and neither can be taken out on its own.
Beyond that, the total cost varies with the form. At the same volume of judgement, an accumulating form makes each judgement material for the next. Without accumulation, the same judgement is made from nothing every time. Part of what makes the cost feel high comes not from volume but from its failure to accumulate.
Whether You Decide in a Form That Can Be Traced Later Is Where This Divides
Which side you are currently on can be read from how decisions were left behind rather than from a feeling.
Bring to mind one occasion last month that required a judgement. Whether to take an enquiry, what to price something at, whether to continue or stop. Then check whether you can state what you used as material and what you did not take. Answer it, and that judgement can still be worked on later. If you cannot, the decision itself remains while nothing has accumulated as judgement.
Being unable to state it is not a matter of ability. The faster judgement runs, the more the material is processed without reaching awareness. With experience the processing gets faster still. Speed itself is a good state. Fast processing, though, leaves no record, so when something is wrong it is unclear what to change.
Next, check when the result of that judgement becomes clear. It splits into what comes back immediately, what takes months, and what never resolves. The more of the third there is, the larger the volume of undecided material being held. That volume is the substance of the thinness felt at the desk.
Third, check not whether you consulted but what changed after consulting. If material increased, the consultation is functioning. If it only became lighter without the judgement changing, what acted was contact. Both have value, and they are different things. Evaluated together, material gets sought where contact was needed and contact where material was needed.
There are meetings, there are people you know, conversations at home run normally, and something remains. The observation is accurate and it does not indicate a failure in relationships. What remains is an arrangement in which decisions have gathered into one place, and arrangement sits on a different axis from volume of conversation.
On the side that contact reduces, the offered remedies land squarely. Co-working spaces and trade gatherings act accurately on that side. What remains beyond it moves according to whether judgements are in a form that accumulates. Neither one is sufficient alone, and the order is to look first at which side is what remains.
That judgement has gathered cannot itself be changed. What can be changed is whether that judgement takes a form that can be traced later. Pick one decision from last month and see whether you can add the option you did not take. If you can write it, the next judgement rests on it. If you cannot, that is the first place available to move.
Where material for judgement gets made, and what rises into awareness as an option, is handled by Reading unable to change through cognitive science. The inside of being unable to decide is handled by The structure of being unable to decide, and the work of holding the standard for what counts as good on your own side by How to build a worldview.
Adjacent states are handled by other articles. The mechanism by which the entrance to judgement gets omitted is in Having stopped questioning things is not idleness, the line between material that may be borrowed and judgement that may not in What thinking for yourself actually contains, and the way the conditions of income set the amount of freedom in How to be free in life.
