Introduction: One Concept That Bears Directly on How You Work
The mechanics and history of capitalism have no shortage of explanations. What this article takes up is a single concept within them that bears directly on how an individual works. It is called double freedom.
The concept answers, head on, the question why did nothing get easier after I went independent? It is not about institutions and it is not about ideology. It is an instrument for judging where you are currently standing.
Here is the conclusion first. We became free in two senses. Free of bonds of status, and at the same time free of means of production. The second freedom frequently nullifies the first.

Two Freedoms Arrived Together
On Marx’s analysis, the worker under capitalism is free in two senses [Marx, 1867].
The first freedom is freedom from bonds of status. Under feudal arrangements, peasants were tied to the land and could not move without a lord’s permission. With capitalism came release from status constraints, freedom of movement, freedom to choose an occupation. This is unambiguously an advance.
The second freedom is the freedom of holding no means of production. Here sits the core of the problem.
The village peasant, poor as they were, held the land they worked and their implements. Then the enclosures of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century England drove them off the land, as landowners converted arable to pasture in anticipation of demand from the wool trade. Having lost the land, they flowed into the cities as pure workers holding nothing but their own labour power, with no means of production.
Marx called this state — free in status, holding no means of production — double freedom.
The Position Kozo Uno Gave the Concept
The Japanese economist Kozo Uno systematised this concept as the core of capitalism’s logic and placed it at the base of his own principles of political economy [Uno, 1964].
The character of Uno’s work is worth stating here. Uno pursued the question of what logic a capitalist society runs on while separating it from revolutionary political thought. He examined the internal consistency of the argument closely and rejected and reorganised even Marx’s own claims where he found contradictions — a stance devoted purely to understanding how the mechanism works.
This article uses the framework in the same sense. Not to adjudicate a system, but as an instrument for seeing one’s own position accurately.
Free-Looking, and Unable to Leave
A person holding double freedom looks free. They can change firms. They can change occupations. They can go independent.
But the structure — living by using someone else’s means of production and selling labour to someone else — does not open.
Escaping that structure is not solved by finding a better job. It requires a change of a different kind: holding means of production.
Laying This Over the Way People Work Now
What follows is this framework applied to the present. It is a reading across of a structural correspondence, not something the sources state directly — worth making explicit.
Many who now work independently are in a state corresponding to double freedom.
- The first freedom — free of belonging to a firm. No commute. No instructions
- The second freedom — not holding what serves as means of production in a digital economy: a direct relationship with readers that does not pass through a foundation, content assets you can administer yourself, mechanisms that function automatically
This is the answer to “why did nothing get easier after I went independent?”
Independence changed the first freedom. The second — holding no means of production — remained. So the structure of selling labour into someone else’s demand, on someone else’s foundation, is unchanged.
Formal independence and a change of economic structure are entirely separate questions. Independence answers the first. Holding means of production is the second.
How far independence actually resolves is treated in going independent does not reduce the number of masters.
Purification: What Was Not a Commodity Becomes One
Uno systematised a second concept that bears closely on this: purification.
Capitalism carries an inherent tendency to draw every element of production and life into commodity relations. In particular the commodification of labour power — treating a human capacity to work as something bought and sold on a market — is its fundamental mechanism.
In practice, elements that were never commodified persist: mutual aid within communities, autonomous artisanal production. As capitalism develops, these are dissolved, and the movement is towards a state in which every value is traded as a commodity. That is purification.
Before industrialisation, work was part of living. Peasants grew food on their own land; artisans made tools in their own workshops. These were not market transactions but direct expressions of living. After industrialisation, that work was converted into something sold. The factory worker sells hours of their own time.
The Same Movement, One Storey Higher
What is happening now is that purification advancing one further stage.
As industrialisation purified the labour of the hands, generative AI is purifying the labour of the head.
Writing was, until recently, not fully commodified: it took time to acquire and not everyone could supply it. Now the act of writing itself is being commodified at speed. So is translating. So is designing. So is implementing.
Which makes it more accurate to see this technology not as a new industrial revolution but as the target of substitution extending upward — from the layer of physical work to the layer of cognitive work.
When industrialisation began, those who held knowledge were thought safe. Machines could displace physical work but not the knowledge that designed or the judgement that managed — and for a long time that was correct. What is now under substitution pressure is precisely that layer once thought safe.
On the Objection That New Jobs Appear
An objection deserves handling here. The industrial revolution ultimately created a great many new jobs; will this not do the same?
The observation is correct. Industrialisation created factory work on a large scale. New kinds of work are appearing now too.
What matters is the question of what position the new work occupies.
The factory workers created by industrialisation did get work. But they held no means of production and were interchangeable labour. If a factory closed, moving to another was the option. If terms were changed unilaterally, refusing was not.
That new employment appears, and whether that employment makes holding means of production possible, are entirely separate questions.
Conclusion: Which Freedom Have You Not Yet Changed?
Double freedom is an instrument for judging where you are currently standing.
The first freedom — from status and belonging — is now held by many. Changing employer or going independent has become easier than it was. But while the second freedom is unchanged, only the number of available buyers has grown; what is sold is still labour.
The question is not where do I work but do I hold means of production? And the cost of entry for answering it has fallen to the lowest level in history.
The same structure seen from the historical side is in the industrial revolution took tools, not skill; the whole picture in why generative AI fluency does not settle next month.
