Nothing You Love

It Is Not That You Have Nothing You Love: You Are Searching by Assessment

Introduction: The Order Was Reversed

Every time someone says find what you love, it stings a little. You envy people with a hobby that absorbs them, and nothing you can honestly call a love comes to view. You take the personality quizzes, scan the lists of things to try, and still meet nothing that says this is it. Perhaps you were born without the bud of passion.

Something is being overlooked in the manner of the search itself. This article makes the following claim. Feeling that you have nothing you love is not because passion is missing in you. It is because you are searching for love by whether it will be assessed well. Love is not buried somewhere in finished form, waiting to be located. It rises after the conditions for absorption have been arranged. The order was reversed. Let us reassemble it correctly.

Love Is Not Something You Find First

Most people think in the order: first find what you love, then become absorbed. Intrinsic satisfaction does not arise in that order. Nobody becomes happy by deciding to enjoy themselves. There is an object one can be absorbed in, the conditions come together, and enjoyment follows as a result. Enjoyment is not something to be seized directly as a target; it arrives of its own accord once the conditions are arranged.

Love follows the same order. Not absorption after love is found, but love budding after the conditions for absorption are arranged. Recall the times you were genuinely absorbed: none of them was the result of deciding to be absorbed. You noticed you already were. You had forgotten the time. Absorption is always recognised after the fact. So the correct instruction to someone who cannot find what they love is not search harder. It is: stop choosing by whether it will be assessed, and choose by whether you can be even slightly absorbed.

Working Backwards Filters Love Out Through a Net of Assessment

Why does love go missing? Under long pressure from it is meaningless unless it is recognised, people begin to consider what will land before what they love. And so when something appealing rises in mind, it is passed through the net of will this be assessed well? and sifted out. Anything unlikely to be assessed drops out of the options before it can be tasted for whether it is loved.

In this way, the mental habit of working backwards goes on filtering love out through the net of assessment. That no love remains in your hands is not because passion is missing but because you are rejecting it at an assessment screening before you can feel it. What is needed first is therefore not to search for love but to halt that screening once. Stop choosing by assessment; try choosing by absorption. After enough of those choices accumulate, love you had become unable to feel buds again.

The Clue Is “Would I Continue if Nobody Were Watching?”

There is a concrete clue for choosing by absorption: if nobody assessed this at all, would I still want to do it? Whatever you believe you would continue with unwatched — the bud of your love is there. Conversely, if the interest vanishes the moment the assessment does, that was not love but a desire for assessment. Choose what remains once assessment is removed. There the love that belongs at the starting point rises.

Clues from the past also help. What absorbed you as a child until you forgot the time. What you find yourself looking into without anyone asking. What leaves you, when it is over, with fullness rather than fatigue. These are traces of a mind moving independently of assessment. Inside what you purely loved before adulthood laid the net of assessment over it, the love that belongs at the starting point sometimes lies sleeping.

Do Not Ask How Large the Love Is

One more thing matters here: do not ask how large the love is. It need not be a respectable hobby. It need not be something to show people. Something modest, which your mind genuinely moves toward, is enough. Indeed, the moment you apply the ruler of assessment — is this substantial enough to call a love? — love is caught in the net again.

Nor is there any need to worry that starting from love will make you self-indulgent. Starting from love and ignoring others are different things. Work born from love has a high purity, and that purity frequently reaches other people more deeply than work born from working backwards. Place a small love at the starting point, and leave it small. That is the first sure step in setting the source of satisfaction inside. The whole picture of the structure — nothing satisfies unless I am recognised — is set out in what the need for approval actually is.

Conclusion: Stop Searching, and Choose by Absorption

Having nothing you love was not because passion was missing in you. You were searching for love by whether it would be assessed, and going on rejecting it at that net. Love was not buried in advance; it rises after choices made by absorption rather than assessment have accumulated.

So you may stop searching. Instead, make one of today’s choices by can I be even slightly absorbed in this? rather than will this be assessed? Beyond that small reversal of order, love you had become unable to feel buds again. Receive, as your next step, the design for growing that bud into sustained absorption.
