Introduction: What the Market Supplies
Definitions of coaching, the range of certifications, and comparisons of how to choose a practitioner are already well documented. What this article takes up is the structure in front of that. What does a market that teaches techniques of influence actually supply?
Let the position be clear at the outset. This article is not a rejection of coaching as a practice, nor of the good faith of those who work in it. Many practitioners genuinely want to be useful and pass on their craft in earnest. What is examined here is not individual conduct but the premise the market as a whole rests on.
Here is the conclusion first. What this kind of market really supplies is not technique but an explanation for failure to move people. And with each explanation received, a yardstick is installed a little more firmly: measure yourself by whether the other person moved.

The Surface Product and What Is Actually Received
On the surface what is sold is concrete: how to phrase acknowledgement, how to hold a listening posture, how to design questions, what shape a conversation should take. The product is packaged as a set of executable procedures.
Yet the causal claim that these techniques produce outcomes has not been established empirically. Organisational behaviour showed early that effective approaches reverse according to situation [Fiedler, 1967]. The market has not contracted regardless. The key to that contradiction lies in what the buyer actually receives.
Along with the technique, one framework of evaluation arrives. The yardstick that measures you by whether the other person moved. With every course attended and every text read, that yardstick is reinforced a little. Behind the product called technique, the yardstick is always attached.
On This Ledger the Technique Never Loses
Consider what happens when it does not work.
Those teaching a technique are not, understandably, constructed so as to doubt its efficacy. The explanation prepared for the case of failure is invariably one that points at the recipient: not practised thoroughly enough, not yet deeply understood, more repetition required.
Such phrases seal off doubt about the technique and turn the inquiry back on the person. Work and it was the technique; fail and your practice was insufficient. On that ledger the product never loses.
Never losing, failure to move someone ceases to be a reason to set the technique down. It converts into a reason to invest more deeply. After the foundation course comes the advanced one, and after that individual accompaniment. That the failure is never resolved is, for this structure, not a defect but a premise.
How the Explanation Folds Back Inward
What makes the structure difficult is that the explanation turns toward your own qualities.
After all this study and practice, if people still do not move, the technique cannot be wrong — what is insufficient is the person using it. Not enough presence. Too small in stature. Still immature. The explanation for failure folds back not outside the technique but inside you.
The inference looks sound at first pass. If a technique that carried many others to success fails only for you, the cause must be you. But the inference stands only on the premise that this technique, correctly used, invariably works. And that premise is itself unexamined. How the models held up as examples are assembled from a sample of survivors alone is taken up in can charisma be learned?.
The folding also erodes self-understanding over time. What begins as an assessment of one occasion — that did not go well — becomes, through repetition, an assessment of the self-image as a whole: I do not have what this requires. Because it advances quietly, it is hard to notice how far one’s own estimation has narrowed.
The Cornered Perform More Deeply
And once inside the loop, what most people do is raise the intensity of the performance.
If it is not working, be more like the ideal. Project more assurance. Choose still more exact words. The more cornered someone is, the more the performance escalates.
It looks irrational. If something has stopped working, doubting the performance would make more sense than intensifying it. But for someone whose yardstick sits in another person’s response, doubting the performance is effectively unavailable. To doubt it is to doubt the ideal image that has been the ground underfoot — which means losing the ground itself.
Facing the loss of ground, the more natural move psychologically is to press down harder on the ground.
What makes the pattern painful is that it takes hold most deeply in those who feel the most responsibility. People who feel responsible receive a poor outcome heavily, and reach harder for the ideal image to make up the weight. Being in earnest translates directly into the depth of the depletion.
What Stops Being Asked When Outcomes Shrink to Individual Technique
One more layer, outward from the individual.
When results do not come, when a group does not cohere, when people leave, the causes do not reduce to a single factor. Distribution of authority, the fit between workload and resources, how contribution is assessed and rewarded, the transparency of decisions. These belong to design, beyond what one person can resolve alone.
Yet where the premise circulates that the quality of someone’s relational technique determines outcomes, individual capability is questioned before any of those factors are examined. The explanation is intuitive and readily accepted. And for as long as it is accepted, the soundness of the design itself stays outside the frame of inquiry.
A caution matters. Describing this as anyone’s conspiracy would be inaccurate. For those teaching technique, reducing the problem to the individual makes the product legible. For those setting the design, it spares the design from examination. And for the recipient, ironically, the account naming their own insufficiency is easier to handle than confronting a vast problem no individual can shift.
Nobody engineered this in bad faith; the structure keeps reinforcing itself as the conveniences of each position overlap.
Two Things to Prevent a Misreading
First, this is not an argument against learning. Once it is understood that effective approaches vary with situation, things worth learning remain. The craft of asking a question, or of listening to the end, does not become void. The problem is the exaggerated claim — acquire this and it reproduces anywhere — circulating with the situational variable removed from the outset.
Second, this is not a rejection of accompaniment as a relationship. Having someone to think aloud with has real value. What is being cut away is what happens when that relationship is placed on a framework that scores it by whether the other person moved. Change the framework and the same conversation becomes something else entirely.
In Summary: Doubt Not the Precision but Where the Authority Sits
Stated structurally, what the market of influence sells looks like this. The technique is the surface of the product; the substance is the yardstick by which you measure yourself.
What follows from receiving that yardstick is fixed. Fail to move someone and you doubt your own qualities; doubting, you intensify the performance; intensifying, people withdraw; as they withdraw, you doubt further. This loop contains no exit reachable by working harder inside it.
If so, the next thing to doubt is not the precision of the technique. It is the design one step earlier: where the authority to evaluate is placed. You could not move them not because the technique was immature or the quality lacking, but because the authority to evaluate was never in your hands to begin with. However precisely you exercise an authority you do not hold, no sense of your own doing accrues.
Before raising the precision of the yardstick, ask who is holding it. The dividing line sits there.
Relating without producing dependency is taken up in when a relationship turns into dependency; the line between setting an example and instrumentalising it in leading by example is not a technique; and the design of relationships in leadership in a community.
