You went independent in order to become free, and you are busier than you were as an employee. Hands moving from morning to night, days off cut back, and next month’s revenue still unreadable.
Structural autonomy is a state in which being able to choose your work on your own judgement is supported by the structure of your income itself. Freedom of judgement rests not on your energy or your capability but on where the income arises from.
The words that explain this state tend to point at your own qualities. You are poor at taking work. You are not negotiating your rates. There is a problem in how you use your time. Every one of them is partly right. Being right, the object to be fixed stays fixed on your own side. And fixing it leaves the state unchanged.
It stays unchanged because the place being fixed is the wrong one. Busyness does not come out of a shortfall of ability; it comes out of the way income arises. In the form of handing over time and receiving a return, the means of increasing income are two: the unit rate and the hours. The rate has an upper bound at what the other party can pay, so once that bound is reached only the hours remain.
Once that single point is clear, some questions can be answered. Why did the improvements not work. Why has the same move been repeated for years. What failed was not the quality of the move but the place the move was landing. The unit rate, the use of your hours, the choice of which projects to accept — all of them are variables inside the form. However you move the variables inside, what settles the upper bound stays on the side of the form.
Other questions remain unanswerable from that point alone. What is to be rebuilt. In what order. What to live on while the rebuilding runs. Seeing a structure and being able to build a different one are separate. The first is done by reading; the second demands a volume of work, and a period in which income falls once. Skip that difference, take home only the methods, and efficiency rises inside the present form while the busyness returns.
What follows is a map that divides the whole of that work into seven territories. The seven are not parallel: until the earlier territory is settled, the next one cannot be. So where to start reading is not a matter of taste but of what is missing right now. Skip the missing place and go on ahead, and what you gained comes straight back off.
This page is not a manual for rebuilding. The procedures sit on the side of each of the seven territories. What it hands over is which territory carries what, in what order each one tells, and the material for judging where you are standing right now. Enter from the procedures without that material and all that remains is the sensation of progress.

Autonomy Now Circulates Largely as Organisational Vocabulary
The context this word sits in leans toward one. It sits inside an organisation, as an object to be developed.
The explanation of the word itself is clear. Autonomy means being able to act on your own values and criteria of judgement without being ruled by others. A distinction gets appended: whereas independence denotes not depending on others economically or physically, autonomy denotes the side of judgement.
The setting where it gets used is the inside of a company. Autonomous personnel. Autonomous organisations. Being able to think and move without waiting for instructions gets placed as the goal of development.
Organisational shapes come with it. Reduce hierarchy, bring decisions closer to the front line, leave roles unfixed. Such shapes are explained as suited to a fast-changing environment. Methods of development are supplied as well. Delegate authority. Have people set their own targets. Do not blame failure. Have people design their own careers.
As accounts of practice, all of it is accurate. It is a fact that waiting for instructions slows an organisation, and somebody handed authority does judge faster, as anyone can observe. The arrangement that separates judgement from economic independence is correct as well.
Line the set up and the premise they hold in common becomes visible. The subject is mostly the company or the personnel function. Autonomy is written as something one party develops in another.
Autonomy inside an organisation is not counterfeit. Being able to move on your own judgement within a given range genuinely holds value. The wider that range, the higher the quality of the hours you work.
What goes unhandled is the outside of the range. You may become able to settle what you do, and where that work comes from, and how the return is decided, sit outside the range.
Go independent and the outside looks as though it becomes yours. Formally it does. The employment contract disappears and you take nobody’s instructions. Even so, for as long as income takes the form of handing over time and receiving a return, how the return is decided sits outside you. The party you hand time to went from one to several, and that is the whole of the change.
The premise survives into independence. Much of the material written for people going independent carries organisational vocabulary straight across. Goal setting, time management, self-management. All of them are instruments assembled on the premise that a range has been given.
Since it circulates as developmental vocabulary, achievement gets adjudicated by developmental criteria too. The criterion of whether the person is thinking and moving on their own. You are moving. And by the amount you move, time decreases.
What the Organisational Vocabulary Leaves Out Is the Premise of Judgement
One thing is missing. Freedom of judgement gets discussed; the premises of judgement do not move.
The premise is where income arises from. Salary for an employee, project fees for somebody independent. In both, somebody else decides the payment.
In a structure where the party deciding payment is fixed, the range of judgement has a ceiling. The ceiling is the range the paying side accepts. Judgements beyond that range cannot be chosen economically. So increasing freedom of judgement alone does not move the ceiling. Moving it means changing the way income arises.
Put differently, autonomy has two layers. The layer of deciding for yourself within a given range, and the layer of holding that range itself on your own side.
Suppose somebody has become able to choose the work they take on. They can choose only where choosing still holds the income. Let a month come where it does not hold, and they take work they would not choose. Freedom of judgement has not disappeared here. The economics were simply settled before the judgement was.
The ceiling rises as capability rises — that reading is natural. It does rise. The manner of rising differs, however. In the form of handing over time, capability is reflected in the unit rate, and the unit rate gets multiplied by time. For as long as one side of the multiplication is time, the upper bound is settled by the length of a day. Double your capability and time does not double.
The structure is not a problem for everybody. For somebody for whom what fits inside a day is enough, there is no reason to change it. It becomes a problem where you know it is not enough and the response is fixed at use more time.
The reason it is fixed sits on the side of the structure too. In the form of handing over time, the only means of increasing income is time, so when it falls short only one option presents itself. It is not weakness of will that narrows the response; the form narrows it.
The two layers do not conflict. Autonomy within the range is required while the work of holding the range itself proceeds. What is required is only not to reverse the order. Keep polishing only what is inside the range and the polished skill can drift into a shape that cannot be carried outside it.
Once this structure becomes visible, how the work you currently hold looks changes. Right after it changes, things can be unsettled. You can see it and have changed nothing yet. That period is inseparable from rebuilding a structure, and reading the unsettledness as a sign of a wrong decision is the more expensive way to read it.
The Definition of Structural Autonomy Splits into Three Conditions, and the Three Depend on One Another in Order
Structural autonomy splits into three conditions. First, that income is separated from the quantity of your time. Second, that you hold the route your income travels. Third, that you settle what gets made and at what price.
The point sits in the word supported. It denotes a state in which freedom of judgement is guaranteed not by the person’s energy or capability but by where income arises from. A state supported by energy disappears in the month the energy runs out.
The three are not independent; they depend on one another in order. Without holding the route you cannot settle the price, and without separation from time no time emerges for growing the route. Trying to move the third one first, and stalling, is a common shape of failure.
Not one of the three means doing it yourself. Not making everything alone, not relying on nobody. What is settled is only whose side the judgement sits on.
Suppose two people with the same income. One earns it by turning over monthly projects. The other has made things that go on being read, and registrations and purchases arise from them. When the hands stop, the former’s income stops and the latter’s continues while declining. The difference is form, not ability.
One could drop the word autonomy and say economic independence — that arrangement is available. It does not point at the same thing. Economic independence is a matter of amount, and the judgement can sit with somebody else even where the amount suffices. Conversely, a state where the amount is small and the judgement sits with you holds together. The two lie on different axes, so neither word alone points at it.
Nor is it a word adjudicated by achieved or not achieved. The three conditions come in degrees. Separation from time is not 0 or 1; it is measurable as what proportion of income is that way. What this word points at, accordingly, is a direction rather than a state. Which way you are moving is measurable at any time. Whether you have arrived usually cannot be settled.
The three are measurable independently. The proportion of income separated from time. The number of routes you own. The count of transactions whose price you set. All three are countable right now. Counted, whether you are progressing becomes knowable separately from the amount.
Defined as a direction, it carries the property of never ending. Something that never ends is awkward to handle as a target. Awkward, and in exchange the state I cannot begin because I have not achieved it does not arise.
Becoming Busier After Going Independent Is the Default Result, Not an Exception
Getting busier after going independent is not a failure of execution. Go independent in the form of handing over time and getting busier is the default.
The reason is simple. As an employee, sales, accounting and hiring were done by other people. Go independent and all of them come to you. By the amount that arrives, the total volume of work rises.
Much of the added work produces no income. What produces income is only the portion of time being handed over. The rest is work required in order to hand over that time.
So try to increase income and the work that produces none increases alongside it. Double the projects and the invoices, the correspondence and the meetings double too. The total rises faster than the income does.
Suppose somebody taking three projects a month raises it to six. Income doubles. The number of meetings, the number of invoices and the confirming exchanges double as well. On top of that, the switching time required to run six in parallel newly arises. Total working hours more than double.
That gap is what busyness actually is. It is not that you are busy because your ability is low; the structure has the shape the more you increase, the busier you get, more than proportionately.
Raise the unit rate and the count need not rise — the move gets used often. It works, up to a range. A unit rate has an upper bound at what the other party can pay. The closer you get to it, the more the work of explaining and negotiating the rise increases. And that work, too, falls outside the time being handed over. Raising the unit rate is an operation that closes the distance to the ceiling without changing the structure.
Not that it should be avoided. While distance to the ceiling remains, it is a fast improvement. It becomes a problem only where the same move continues after arriving at the ceiling. Whether you have arrived is hard to tell from the inside; what is easy to tell is the point at which the volume of work required to raise it stops matching the amount gained.
This manner of increase has one more way of working. The more the work that produces no income grows, the sooner the time for rebuilding the structure disappears. Rebuilding tends to look low-priority among the work that produces no income. Things with deadlines come first, and things without deadlines go to the back. Accordingly, busyness reproduces itself.
Not everybody gets caught by this manner of increase. For somebody whose total volume fits inside a day, with no plan to increase it, the more-than-proportionate property never appears at all. It appears from the moment you try to increase.
Understood as a matter of structure, self-blame about being busy decreases. Decreasing is good, and somebody for whom self-blame was the motive can lose the motive along with it. The replacement motive comes out from the side of what lies beyond the rebuilt structure.
Understanding Goes First Because Entering from the Methods Raises Only Efficiency
The seven territories divide into three acts. The order has a reason: enter from the side of the methods and efficiency alone rises while the present structure is maintained.
Act I is understanding. Why you became busy. Why it looked like a problem of character. What gets handled here is two things: the structure of the economy and the structure of cognition.
Act II is what to rebuild. What to place as the source of value. Why you are the one handling it. One territory carries this.
Act III is how to rebuild. Design, words, place, arrangements. Four territories line up.
Consider taking home only the methods of Act III. Introduce automation and invoicing and correspondence become automatic, and time frees up. Into the freed time you put one more project. The structure has not changed, so busyness returns to where it was. Rise in efficiency and the volume you can handle in the same form increases. Increase the volume and the room for changing the structure shrinks further.
There is no room in the schedule to proceed in order — the objection is accurate. The room genuinely is not there. So Act I demands no time. It is the kind of thing you understand by reading. What demands time is Acts II and III, and if you have passed through Act I, where that time goes is already settled. What costs most in a state of no room is time spent landing somewhere that does not change the structure.
There is no rule that you must read in the order of the acts. Entering from wherever you are stuck is fine. The order tells only at the stage of actually moving your hands to change the structure. The order of reading and the order of fixing are separate things.
Act I also becomes a place you return to repeatedly. When judgement wavers midway through rebuilding, most of the wavering comes out of the places where understanding of the structure is short.
The reason there are three acts also comes out of the order. Between understanding and rebuilding, a stage that settles what to rebuild necessarily enters. Skip this stage and the object of rebuilding becomes improving what you are already doing. Improvement does not change the structure, so what you saw in Act I stays exactly as it was.
Nor is this division the only one available. The sequence of understanding, deciding and building appears well outside the rebuilding of a business. It is cut into three here because the place where the sequence gets skipped is the same every time. What gets skipped is the middle.
Arranged as three acts, the whole looks large. Looking large, you want to grasp the whole before starting. Grasp it before starting and you do not start. The whole is something to use as a map, not a condition of passage.
Act I-① Economic Structure — What Settles the Upper Bound Is the Form, Not the Amount
What settles the upper bound is not the amount of income but the form in which income arises. The first half of Act I looks at that form alone. The amount moves as a result.
The six below are gathered by getting out of the labour-intensive form. Why the form of handing over time and receiving a return holds an upper bound, and how that bound gets settled somewhere other than capability or unit rate.
Six articles take separate faces of that form. The ceiling built into selling time takes apart what looks like a matter of scale and is a matter of form. Why raising your hourly rate does not make you free argues head-on that raising the rate closes the distance to the ceiling.
Why raising productivity does not leave you with free time looks at what fills the time that frees up. Unless what enters the freed time is settled, the opening fills with work.
Preparing to go independent rearranges the order of preparation. Savings buy time, and unless what the bought time is for is settled, the time disappears. Before you negotiate a higher rate, look at who is setting the figure takes up how the price gets settled in the first place. What separates dependence you chose from dependence you can no longer leave takes up the process of becoming unable to leave a particular counterparty. The contract and the terms stay as they were; only the option of leaving shrinks.
Pass through this territory and the question how do I earn more turns into the question what am I selling. If what you are selling is time, the only thing you can increase is time.
Many people arrive here feeling they already understand the economics. Sometimes they do. The adjudication is easy: look at the first response that comes to mind when income falls right now. If it is increase the hours worked, the side of the form has not changed.
This territory alone changes nothing. Seeing is where its work ends, and the side that builds a different form sits in Acts II and III. What changes at the point of seeing is only the set of candidates for what to try next.
Right after you understand it as a problem of form, the work you have done can feel as though it was all wasted. What this territory sets out to change is the form, not the substance. The skills, and the relationships with the people who pay you, stay in your hands when the form changes. What does not stay is the routine specific to the present form — how you put a quote together, how you fill the working hours.
Act I-② Cognitive Structure — Wanting Comes First and Perceiving Follows
The reason you cannot move even when the structure is visible sits on the cognitive side. Whether what you see gets perceived as something relating to you is settled separately from how fast you understand.
At the head of the six stands reading unable to change through cognitive science, which takes the order in which wanting comes first and perceiving follows. Not the reverse.
Six articles follow, each at a different position of not-moving. Inaction is not a problem of will takes apart the very view that reduces the quantity of action to the quantity of will. A mental block is not a defect shows the function that returns change as something usable rather than something to be destroyed.
Patterns of thought are not something to be corrected asks where those patterns were received from. Inattentional blindness is not something you remove unpicks what is happening on the side of the field of view.
Self-transformation does not last because the order of changing is reversed traces the mechanism by which trying to change from behaviour gets returned, and before changing a habit, change where you return to is the prescription for it.
This territory sits in Act I for reasons of order. Even with the economic structure visible, unless what is seen gets perceived as something relating to you, it does not connect to action. Some people read the same information and move while others do not, and the difference is not speed of understanding but how that information connected to the side of what the person wants. Unconnected, it ends up remembered as correct information.
Talk of cognition reads as close to exhortation. It looks close and is the inverse. Exhortation explains the quantity of action by the quantity of will. What this territory handles is the conditions under which behaviour changes without passing through will. The direction of explanation is exactly opposite.
Nor does everything change once perception changes. The economic structure does not change by itself when perception does. The two get run in parallel. Advance only one and the advanced side stops and waits.
Read this territory first and the economics can get put off. The perception side is easy to be convinced by when read, and conviction arrives before action does. A state in which conviction alone accumulates needs watching. The quantity of conviction tells you nothing about whether the structure changed. What tells you is the proportion of income separated from time.
Act II-③ The Source of Value — the Branch Point
What Act II settles is what to make the source of value. This act holds only one territory because this is the branch point.
The whole act is carried by stepping down from price competition. For as long as you remain in a place where you are compared, the other party settles the price. It follows the choice of changing the unit of comparison itself.
Eight articles line up, starting from how the figure gets settled. Do not begin pricing from cost shows that what carries the price is not the object. Choosing to stop analysing competitors looks at the cost of entering the frame of comparison at all.
Being unable to decide is not character treats slowness of decision as the consequence of a structure in which judgement has been handed over. How to make a concept and building a view of the world lay out the order of putting your own values first.
How social common sense is made unpicks the mechanism by which choices align with no order given. Where the value of an intangible product resides follows where the value of a formless thing sits, and the mechanism by which other people’s assessments preoccupy you looks at what occurs when the ruler is placed outside.
Proceed to Act III without settling what counts as value and all four line up in form alone. From outside, it looks like progress.
Suppose two people with equal skills in the same market. One researches the going rate and settles a price; the other puts out first what they regard as important and transacts with whoever responded to it. The former has competitors; the latter has nobody to be compared with.
Putting your values out first is what people who already sell well do — the reading comes up often. The order is reversed: you stop being compared because you put them out. It does not hold, though, unless people who respond exist in the market. Putting it out and holding a route by which it reaches people are separate, and the latter sits in Act III.
Nor does the price necessarily rise because you put your values out. It rises only where you have left the field of comparison. Whether you have left it is knowable from how often you are asked for competing quotes.
By the amount you place the source of value on your own side, the people who do not fit come not to fit clearly. Their leaving is as expected, and the timing of their leaving arrives regardless of your convenience.
Act III-④ Marketing Design — Purchase Is One Event Partway Through a Relationship
The first of Act III is the design of relationships. What is arranged in stages is neither products nor measures but depth of involvement.
At the entrance to the eighteen stands the design of a marketing funnel. Place purchase at the destination or partway through and the whole design changes.
Eighteen articles sit here, the most of the seven territories, because this is where the vocabulary of numbers is thickest. Conversion rate, open rate, drop-off rate, retention rate, repeat rate, customer spend, customer acquisition cost, customer lifetime value.
The number articles are many by intent. A number is itself a frame, so unless what each one measures gets unpicked one at a time, measuring turns into the purpose.
The design side is carried by the principles of funnel design, customer journey design and the premises of list building; the writing side by writing an email newsletter, segmented delivery and the dividing line of educational marketing.
On the side of technique, the product launch takes the method of producing a reason to buy now and its cost, the design of a trial offer takes what selling cheaply means, and repeat measures looks at the conditions under which a second purchase occurs.
Where the conversion rate is low, the writing is usually what gets fixed. Upstream of the writing sits the stage of relationship, and if upstream is missing, no amount of fixing the writing gets it through. The order of diagnosis is held by the diagnostic procedure for why nothing sells.
Designing relationships takes too long — the objection lands. In exchange, what accumulates does not decrease. Stop the advertising and the inflow stops; the relationship does not. The criterion for choosing is not speed but what remains when you stop.
Relationships alone produce no income. What produces it is the offer, and the shape of the offer interlocks with the other three of Act III. And taking relationships as the axis makes short-term numbers hard to move. Keep watching the numbers through a period when they do not move and you enter the route where measuring turns into the purpose.
Act III-⑤ Verbalisation and Transmission — Without the Distinction, the Word Cannot Be Searched For
The job of the second of Act III is to restate a distinction inside you in a form the other party can use. Before skill in expression comes whether the distinction is in place.
The overview sits in the technique of verbalisation. Things fail to become words not because thinking is shallow but because either no word denotes the distinction, or the other party does not use that word across the same range.
Seventeen articles divide into five layers. The layer of material: how to write primary information, how to conduct a customer interview, what to do when you do not know what to write, how to build a persona. The layer of understanding: the order in which explanation improves, the technique of analogy, the principles of article structure, how to write headings, how to write a lead paragraph.
The layer of mechanism: before reaching for a list of psychological triggers, the three NOTs, do not use loss aversion to stoke urgency, where social proof applies. The layer of handing over judgement: the principles of sales copy, the structure of a sales letter. The layer of handling experience as material: writing from personal experience, customer testimonials.
The fifth layer alone differs in nature from the others. Failures of form can be rewritten; handling somebody else’s words does not come back with a rewrite.
Write the same content and it reaches some people and not others. The difference is not writing skill but whether the range across which the writer uses a word overlaps the reader’s range. Without overlap, the reader receives it accurately, in a meaning other than yours.
Verbalisation gets filed away as a matter of talent. There are parts where talent makes a difference. In most cases, though, what is stuck is not the expression but the distinction one step before it. With the distinction in place, the word can be searched for afterwards.
There is also an upper bound on what can be put into words. Try to put everything into words and you end up discarding the part that cannot be. And as verbalisation proceeds what you can write increases, and by that amount the judgement of what not to write becomes newly necessary.
Act III-⑥ Community Management — Rebuilding Comes with Isolation
The design of a place where people gather is the third of Act III. It sits in Act III because rebuilding a structure comes with isolation.
At the centre of the four below sits the design of community management. Dependency is settled not by the bearer’s attitude but by whether the source of the two senses stays with the bearer as an individual or has moved to the place itself.
Four articles take separate faces of a place. The order of team building shows that what can be handed over is only what has finished being settled, and that the judgement step rides only on top of the execution step.
The two certainties place-building supplies draws the line that safety is a condition and not a direction. Being able to speak safely is a condition for speaking, not what gets spoken about.
Leader qualities do not exist shows how lists of qualities get produced by observing only the people who functioned. Most people step down not on ability but on a matching against an image of a bearer that does not exist. The conditions under which a membership business keeps running looks at what changes once a cost is attached.
The further out ahead you move, the fewer people are in the same position. Fewer, and nobody is left to verify your judgement. Somebody who changed the structure of their income commonly stops telling people close to them about it. It becomes a story requiring explanation, and explaining produces distance. As a result of stopping, verification of their judgement tends to halt.
Building a place is something to do once you have scale — the order gets assumed. It is independent of scale. It holds together with two people, and if anything the smaller it is the easier the source is to move to the place. Build it after scale arrives and the shape in which you are already at the centre is fixed in place.
Not everybody needs a place. If a route for verification exists elsewhere, that suffices. What can be said is only that a route is required.
Order tells in this territory in one more way. Rather than building the place and then moving the source, building it intending to move it from the start is cheaper. Removing a centre that has already formed means reassembling your relations with participants. It is one of the things settleable while it is small.
Hold a place and your time decreases. Where the decrease is drawn from is the range the fourth of Act III handles.
Act III-⑦ Implementation and Automation — Only What Has Finished Being Settled Can Be Brought Forward
Settling judgements in advance is the work of the fourth of Act III. In a one-person business, dependence on the individual is not the problem to be solved; what is being solved is judgement arising on every execution.
At the head of the nine stands systemising a solo business, whose subject is the line between what can be brought forward and what cannot.
Nine articles line up from the entrance on the receiving side through to payment. On the entrance side: designing above the fold, landing page structure, designing a lead magnet.
The stages that follow: automatic reply emails, the order of an email series, choosing a mailing platform. The foundation: the cost of switching web hosts, online payments for a sole trader, online payment setup.
This territory has a property the others do not. There is much talk of tools, so it is easy to reach for first. Reach for it and a sense of progress is obtained.
What progressed is the preparation, not the structure. What has not been settled cannot be automated, so assemble the tools first and the assembled tools merely make visible what has not been settled. A delivery arrangement in order with nothing settled about what gets delivered is the representative case. The arrangement works correctly. At the end of what works, there is nothing to send.
May one not enter from the tools and settle things while running? A fair question. One may. Tools, though, can be swapped out. What was settled first survives a change of tools. If you are choosing an order, placing what survives first is the cheaper one.
Nor is it necessary to settle everything before starting. What can be settled is only judgements you have already passed through several times. Judgements you have not passed through do not become objects of automation.
Within the automated range, the number of times you judge decreases. Decreased, the occasions for noticing that the precision of your judgement has dropped decrease too. Periodically, you end up opening what is being processed automatically, one item at a time.
At the Stage Before the Structure Has a Name, People Search in the Words of Symptoms
The seven above are arranged from the side of the structure. At the stage of not yet holding the name of the structure, that arrangement is not an entrance.
What is at hand at that stage is the words of symptoms. No time. No confidence. Nothing lasts. The vocabulary of structure has not arrived yet.
So an entrance is opened from the side of symptoms as well, divided into six groupings.
On friction about how you work, not being cut out for employment and the answer to “not wanting to work is just self-indulgence” dissect from the side of structure what had looked like a matter of character. On time and income, having no time is not a problem of management and counting the reasons for not earning from somewhere other than ability.
On the wearing down of publishing and attracting people, being tired of social media comes from stacking on rented ground and followers not growing is not a problem of the business. On distrust of yourself and nothing lasting, starting while lacking confidence and nothing lasting is only a normal function at work.
On being swayed and unable to decide, having stopped questioning things is not idleness and being unable to say no is neither kindness nor weakness. On direction and anxiety, having no dream is not a deficiency and money anxiety does not disappear with an amount.
These hand over to one of the seven territories. They do not end with handling the symptom. Somebody entering from no time arrives not at an article about how to use time but at the upper bound of the form of handing over time. Where they arrive is Act I.
The articles entered from symptoms all end up saying the same thing — it can look that way. The explanation of the structure is common. What differs is which symptom connects to that structure. Even with the same structure, what you arrived at from your own symptom is perceived as being about you.
Reading only the symptom side does not reach rebuilding. What it reaches is the point of understanding that it is a consequence of structure. And the words of symptoms reach only people feeling that symptom strongly. To people not feeling it strongly, it reaches only from the side of structure. Two entrances are required for this reason.
Where to Read from Is Settled by What Is Missing Now
There is no need to read the seven in sequence. Where you enter is settled by what is missing now.
If the reason for your busyness is not yet clear, start from economic structure. Pass through the matter of form first and the judgements that follow do not revert to increase the time.
If the reason is clear and you are not moving, it is cognitive structure. What sits here is what lies between understanding and being able to move.
If you are ready to move and what to sell is not settled, it is the source of value. Proceed to Act III without settling this and all four line up in form alone, with for whom and for what left blank.
If what you sell is settled, it is Act III. The order among the four follows what is currently missing. No route by which it reaches people, marketing design; a route but it does not get through, verbalisation and transmission; judgement closed inside one person, community management; judgement arising every time, implementation and automation.
Exactly one swap costs something: passing through Act III first and leaving Act II for later. The methods stick, and since where the acquired methods point is not settled, you end up borrowing somebody else’s way of selling.
Somebody who acquired sales technique first and then uses it on their own product sometimes finds what they wrote does not feel like theirs. The technique is not wrong; the way of placing value that the technique presumes is not that person’s.
Keeping to the order means never being able to start selling — the worry arrives. You may start selling. Act II is not something to complete before selling. The response to selling becomes material for confirming how value is placed. The order tells on the side of how you read the response.
This order changes with what you currently hold. For somebody whose income is already partly separated from time, Act I becomes a matter of confirmation.
Mind the order too much and preparation before starting increases. Added preparation consumes time as work that does not change the structure. The order is something to consult when you waver, not a condition for beginning.
What Settles the Whole Is the Narrowest Point
The seven territories are not independent processes. Advance one and the others move.
Settle how value is placed and what you can write changes. Change what you can write and who it reaches changes. Change who it reaches and how the price is settled changes.
The reverse occurs too. Sometimes only on writing do you learn what you had regarded as important. In that case the work of Act III settles Act II.
Accordingly, completion cannot be adjudicated per territory. What can be adjudicated is only where the narrowest point is when the seven are run through.
The narrow place moves. Widen the route and next the getting-through narrows. Fix the getting-through and the volume of judgement stops keeping up. Registrations rising while purchases do not is the shape where the route widened and the stage of relationship stayed narrow. What gets fixed here is not the route.
Adjudicating narrowness has an order. Look from upstream. Is it reaching, is it being read, is the relationship continuing, is an offer emerging, is it being judged. If upstream is narrow, downstream numbers merely have a small denominator and cannot be used to adjudicate quality. Begin fixing from downstream and you read the smallness of the denominator as a problem of quality.
If they move together it makes no difference where you start — one reading goes that way. It does make a difference. Moving together is what happens after you start. Where you first put your hand is settled by what is narrowest now. Skip the narrow place, widen the others, and the whole does not move.
Narrowness cannot be adjudicated by numbers alone. Numbers appear only where somebody has passed through that stage. A stage nobody has passed is not zero; it is unobserved. Read numbers without separating zero from unobserved and the narrowest place drops out of the candidates. A place that dropped out stays out at the next measurement too.
That the narrow place moves has a practical implication. What you fixed does not stay narrow for a while. So fixing the same place repeatedly is often not working. Repeating without effect is often because that place is the one easiest for you to fix. Ease of fixing and narrowness are unrelated.
Knowing they move together makes it harder to judge digging deeply into one. Advancing the whole thinly is safe, and everything can be left narrow. Being safe and becoming passable are separate. A narrow place stays narrow until it is widened.
Even with a Correct Design, Three Things Cannot Be Avoided
However well you proceed, the following three occur. Separating what skill can reduce from what it cannot keeps you from misreading them when they arrive.
First, there is a period in which income falls once. In the process of reducing the form of handing over time and increasing the form that accumulates, the decreasing side decreases first and the increasing side increases later. The two periods do not overlap.
Second, there is a period you cannot explain to those around you. Before what you are doing takes shape, it looks from outside as though you are doing nothing. Try to explain it and you end up speaking of something not yet holding together as though it did.
Third, your earlier judgements look like mistakes. Looking back after the structure becomes visible, the period spent handing over time looks wasted. It only looks that way; the skills and trust gained in that period carry straight into the next form.
All three are readily read as signs of failure. Misread them and the response points back the way you came. Fill a month when income fell by taking on more projects and the income returns. By the amount it returns, the time for the accumulating side disappears. Six months later, you are in the same place.
What they share is that from outside they look like a retreat. Income falling, unable to explain, denying your past. Not only do those around you read it that way; you read it that way too. That is why the response to misreading points back the way you came.
If the fall is known in advance there must be a way to proceed without it — the question stands. There is. Maintain the time-handing form and accumulate in surplus time. In that case it does not fall, and progress is slower. Which you take is settled by how long a period the funds at hand can buy.
Nor is it that only these three occur. What was raised is only what occurs irrespective of the skill of the approach. What skill can reduce is not included here. Put the reducible ones first and preparation for the irreducible ones goes to the back.
Of the three, the second can be lightened. Keep progress in a form that goes outside and the period you cannot explain shortens by itself. What goes out is not results but the record of passing through. The third can be lightened as well by writing down the judgement of the time in the materials of the time, which lowers how much it later looks like a mistake. The one that cannot be lightened is the first — the period when income falls.
Knowing they are unavoidable sometimes delays the response when they occur, because you stop at this is a thing that occurs. Even where the occurrence is unavoidable, the length of the period does move.
Structural Autonomy Is Not the Purpose but the Condition Under Which the Question of What For Begins
Holding the structure on your own side is not the purpose. The purpose lies beyond it. Being able to express your own philosophy and aesthetics without anybody’s permission. Living alongside people who resonate with it.
The structure is the condition for that. Without the condition in place, expression becomes subordinate to making a living. Expression that is subordinate stops being yours the longer it continues.
Accordingly, new questions begin after you hold structural autonomy. What to do. Who to do it with. Where to head.
These questions cannot be answered before the structure is in place. Try to answer and you answer inside the present constraints. An answer produced inside constraints changes when the constraints come off.
Once income has separated from time, rest first. What emerges after resting tends to be closer to what that person actually wanted to do. What you want to do, thought up while still busy, is indistinguishable from flight from busyness.
This order is the order of the whole site as well. All seven territories place means, and the question of what for belongs to none of them. It belongs to none because it sits outside the territories — on each person’s own side. What can be handed over is only the conditions under which that question becomes answerable.
Until the structure is in place there is no point thinking about what you want to do — that reading is available too. Think about it, by all means. What you will be doing is looking at whether the answer that emerged has the shape of a constraint. An answer beginning if only I had more time is a constraint turned inside out.
Nor does the purpose get found automatically once the structure is in place. Sometimes nothing emerges afterwards. What fails to emerge then is not a problem of the structure. What the structure removes is the constraint; what to place where the constraint was is separate work.
This positioning tells at moments of judgement, because the move that thickens the structure and the move that approaches the purpose sometimes diverge. When they diverge, the structure side takes priority because it is the condition. The longer the period of arranging conditions, however, the more what it was for fades.
Handle the structure as the purpose and you lose direction the moment it is in place. Not to lose it, you end up putting into words what you hold it for, before it is in place. That work is handled in Act II.
Putting it into words and settling it now are separate. Settle it now and you fix an answer produced inside constraints. What gets kept is not the answer but the question the answer was searching for. The question keeps its shape when the constraints come off.
Whether the Structure Moved Is Measurable Without Looking at the Amount
Whether the rebuilding moved is knowable from three confirmations. All three can be carried out without looking at the amount of income.
The first confirmation is to calculate what proportion of income remains in a month when you stopped your hands.
If the whole amount stops, income is still tied to time. The proportion remaining is directly how far the structure has progressed. There is no need actually to stop; it is calculable from the breakdown.
The second confirmation is to count what route the enquiries currently arriving came through.
If they come by way of somebody else’s place, that route is borrowed. Change the terms of the place you are borrowing and the route disappears with it. Count how many routes sit on your own side.
The third confirmation is to look at the number of jobs you have recently declined.
If you are declining, judgement is arriving before economics. If you have declined none, you have not yet reached a state of being able to choose. What is looked at is not the count itself but whether the judgement to decline arose.
Not one of them looks at the amount of income. The amount is a result, and lies on a different axis from the structure. A state where the amount has risen and the structure is the same occurs.
The time each takes to change differs. The judgement to decline changes from the month after you settle it. The number of routes takes several months. The proportion remaining when you stop moves in units of years. Measuring the three at the same frequency is therefore meaningless. Once a year, quarterly, and monthly respectively suffice.
What they give you is your position, nothing further. None of them tells you what to do now. What they tell you is only where you are now. The next move comes out of whichever of the seven territories is narrowest.
This map has its own limit as well. The division into seven is for explanation; an actual business does not divide this way. If the division stops fitting, discard the division. What remains is the single point that busyness is a consequence of structure.
Over what period it changes, in what order to proceed, how far it may fall. These vary with what you currently hold. Hand over a figure and the plan gets settled without those conditions being looked at.
What remains instead is the structure by which the form of income settles the upper bound, the order by which perceiving comes after wanting, and the fact that there are questions which cannot be answered until the conditions are in place. Hold those three and which act you are in now, and what is narrow next, become adjudicable on your own.
